Something I forgot to mention.
Rumor has it that these VE pumps pop seal when pressure is @ 1 bar or above.
So those of you that want to fit a lift pump make sure it is rated @ max 10psi and if you decide to try adjust the pressure regulator please keep it below 1 bar.
In my personal experience, lift pump doesn't help you need to adjust the pressure regulator.

Martin, thanks again for the Youtube video.....very informative.

How will I be able to check the pressure if I want to adjust the pump pressure? Where do you take the reading?
It was raining last night so could not even look at my IP :thumbdown:

Sjoe nou vra jy n ding
Onthou net ek is geen ekspert nie maar wat ek gedoen het is die volgende.
Ek het n huco 0.4 bar pomp ingesit omdat ek nie my lek op my diesel pype kon kry nie. Die pomp het toe net gepomp met geen beperking nie, dit is toe dat ek "pressure regulator on VE pumps" gaan google het en op die fotos en youtube video afgekom het. Ek het toe met die engine af maar ignition aan sodat die pomp wel pomp die regulator begin in slaan het en hoe meer ek hom ingeslaan het hoe moeiliker het die pomp begin pomp. Ek het hom ingeslaan totdat die pomp skaars diesel deur die VE pomp kon pomp terug na die tank toe.

Of die metode reg of verkeerd is sal ek nie weet nie, my bakkie ry nog steeds na n paar duisend km en lek geen diesel by die VE pomp nie so ek neemaan dat dit wel ok is en met my lift pomp wat veronderstel is om net 0.4 bar te kan doen moet my pressure reguleerder seker op so 0.4 bar wees.

Ek dink nie jy het n lift pomp nodig om dit te doen nie wat jy kan doen is om n pressure guage voor die pomp te sit en dat kan jy sommer n fiets pomp vat om drukking in die pype te sit wat voor die VE pomp is, jy gaan wel moet seker maak dat die pype vol diesel is en nie lug nie.

Ok so just to keep this thread updated, I removed my fuel filter and housing over the weekend and drained the content so see what was in it....... I was quite surprised to find 70ml of water inside the filter as well as allot of dirt. So I think I had allot of restriction in my fuel filter which wzs creating the problem I had.

While the bonnet was open I uped the fuel a bit and set the turbo actuator to 0.95bar boost.....it now pulls like a train!

Wow .....That's a fair bit of water !!

I suppose one just needs to fill up with one "bad" batch of diesel, from a supplier who's tanks are running low and there you have water in the system.

Do you think if there is a bit of water that gets forced through the system ( and through the injectors ) on our old school diesels, that it will cause any damage? Obviously a hydro-lock would cause major damage. Would it damage the injector nozzles to any degree, as I'm sure that some water would make it past the filter if it was that full.

Cedric, I dont think the water will cause any damage in the engine. Like you say the engines are old school and has nothing fancy.
Hydrolic lock will be very unlikely as it injects very small amounts of diesel at a time.
Worst case the injector tips might get some corrosion but even that is very unlikely on our engines unless it gets so much water in it that the pipes are filled with water right to the injector tip.
I know on the modern common rail injectors water can have an effect on the injectors

Forgot to mention, I changed the filter in Namibia in June when I had a similar hesitation and suspect the water must have come from there. I have also done the river trip with the same filter so it has been used well.....
