Hi Cedric

I think the story goes like this:
Petrol fumes is cleaner when compared to old school smokeys, like your 4.2s.
But to the extent that we use more petrol than you use diesel, it may work out to be worse overall.

Modern super lean dry diesel engines are much more efficient, hence more environmentally friendly, but the gasses coming out is also cleaner.
Although both modern engines use them catalytic converters etc. So not sure on cleanliness, but definitely more efficient. Hence more environmentally friendly.

Cedric, there are lots of theories about this.

Modern Diesel engines produce less "greenhouse gasses" (Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide) than petrol engines, but I read somewhere that they produce small amounts of a number of other gasses that are more toxic, which petrols do not do.

However, one thing is certain (and seldom considered): No matter how big, old tech and inefficient your engine is, you have to drive a hell of a long way to damage the environment to the same extent that the manufacturing process for even the smallest and most efficient econobox does.
