Re: Patrol 4.2 TD - mods for more power
Hi Michael.
See results from dyno run below.
The guys at SAC said my fuel pump was already running quite rich so they raised boost to 0.8 bar to match fuelling.
I havent towed yet but there is a very steep incline on N1 approaching Pietersburg and deliberatly pushing it hard up there i managed to get egt up to 620.
I beleve it id prudent to keep temps below 650 ideally and up to a max of 720. Maybe others could comment on that though.
Overall fuel consumption was dead on 8km/l on run from Vaalwater to Hoedspruit sitting at 120kph and 40km sand roads. Not too bad and im sure that could be improved upon with a bit less lead in the right foot.

On your EGTs: Where is the probe, before or after turbo makes a huge difference.
With great Power comes Great Fuel Consumption

Those figures are very impressive !!!
As Biggles said " Where is your EGT probe fitted? This can make a HUGE difference !!! I have a pre turbo probe and a post turbo probe and the turbo on mine can coll the air by up to 100deg C and the 2 probes are only 800mm apart !!!!
If your egt probe is pre turbo, in my opinion NEVER go over 650deg C and do this temp only for short bursts. Frans ( tour de Frans ) will say you can run 600 deg no problem, and I have pushed mine on a long uphill and kept it at 600-615 deg for a fair amount of time without any issues. The 630deg C mark for me is the max that I will go on mine ( EGT alarm is set at 630 deg C ).
If you r EGT probe is post turbo, then I would run a MAX temp of 530 - 550 deg C, as your turbo cools the exhaust gas dramatically !!! Like I said I see the difference on my EGT gauge.
remember if you have a post turbo probe and a temp of 720deg C you are effectively pushing around 800deg C, and you are going to melt your pistons very very quickly !!!!

Re: Patrol 4.2 TD - mods for more power
Thanks for all the advice regarding the EGT probe position etc.
The guys at SAC fitted it pre turbo so it seems up to 650 degrees should be ok.
See pics of probe and placement of madman meter.
I think it looks almost stock and its in a spot that is easy to see.

Re: Patrol 4.2 TD - mods for more power
Those are great figures Dave and I can just think how much better your Patrol drives now! Fuel consumption is also very impressive!
I also have my EGT probe pre turbo and run mine to about 600 - 610 max, dont think it has been higher than that and think 650 is still very safe.
The problem I am getting since I adjusted my boost to 0.8bar and setting the fuel to match is that my average EGT is running a bit higher and my water temperature goes to about 97 deg when keeping the EGT at 580 for about 10min or so.
This is not alarming for me, but its almost like the radiator cannot cool the engine fast enough. Heat gauge also does not move from where it sits normally.
What is your water temp where it exits the engine?

Re: Patrol 4.2 TD - mods for more power
Yip that is the best place to fit the EGT probe, so 650deg C should be fine. bear in mind though that the longer you burn at 650 deg the water temp WILL go up too if your turbo is water cooled ( I assume it is ). Like what Michael said.
I have a huge radiator fitted to my Iron Maiden, so if worst case scenario occurs constantly there are aftermarket radiators available that will work for you. Remember a diesel motor doesn't like to get too hot. I'd rather run a little cooler than hotter.
But your set up looks good !!

Re: Patrol 4.2 TD - mods for more power
Thanks for the pics. I've been contemplating installing the madman myself(already got the ems unit with egt probe and oil pressure sender), but i am really not feeling that confident to do it myself anymore.djhep wrote:Thanks for all the advice regarding the EGT probe position etc.

Think i'll just pay someone to install it for me...
Ps. Your bakkie's engine is a lot cleaner than mine

Re: Patrol 4.2 TD - mods for more power
I think my temps are looking good.
I just got back from a 400k drive with 1 ton of sleeper wood in the back including Magoebaskloof pass near Tzaneen and egt never rose to over 570 degrees.
The new water temp sensor is right next to the stock water sensor. Max temp was 91 degrees and normally sitting around 78 degrees.
Im really liking this bakkie....it is such a relaxing ride.
After a week or so ownership i dont think i could be happier.
