Kingpin shims needed

Post by NMAD »

I am looking for anyone that can help me with the shims for the king pin bearings to set the pre load correctly.
I currently have the 0.5mm shims and I am urgently looking for the 0.2 mm shims or less. Need 4. The agents don't have any stock in my area CT only in Jburg

You could buy shim stock and make them yourself it will be quite alot cheaper than the agent. The shim stock comes in roll of various thicknesses.

I agree with Andre... they are dead easy to cut and make yourself at a fraction of the cost

Do new kingpin bearings come with a set of shims needed to do everything you need to do. I removed a shim from top and bottom kingpins on both sides on the Sani, and have them laying here, but not sure I am going to need them in future when I replace the kingpins.

I have no idea what the thicknesses are that I removed, I just took whet felt like the thinnest shims out and it sorted my floppy wheel problem.

As far as I know the bearings don't come with new shims. Just also check as I seem to recall hearing that the kingpin bearings are the same as a golf wheel bearing (not sure if front or rear ). You will need those shims back in there once the new bearings are fitted in to get the correct Nm on the steering, otherwise your steering will not return to centre and you will go round and round and round and round..................

Gees, see if you can find out about that golf bearing deal!!! I have this horrible item on my "to do" list that is going to releave me of close on R2K with wheel bearings, from the land down under.

But then I also get the wipers and seals, if I remember correctly.

I better also go find those shims I removed. They are laying about between all the goodies that got picked up from the workshop and dumped into the store.

Also still looking for anybody needing a front diff for a HB, some torsion bars and drive shafts with manual free wheel hubs, disks and callipers. I see I had some bites in OLX and Junkmail, but my phone was ignoring that Gmail account and I missed them.

Flip thanks guys, that's a brilliant idea to make them up as you have said! :woo:

After greasing mine my steering is so loose it's all over the place and it has a slight wobble at 100km so need to tighten those bearing up.

Adding shims makes it more loose. Removing them makes it tighten up.

Mine had a wobbly front end, being a 80"s model and probably never looked at, I removed some shims and it's great now.
