Clutch pedal just dropped to floor

Post by Tunja »

So I was towing the xcape caravan and decided to change gear and found the clutch pedal on the floor  Trol still pulling fine no clutch slippage or anything so I lifted the pedal with my foot a couple of times and suddenly I had clutch again??? so I stopped and checked clutch fluid level and everything normal.

What can be causing this? I thought the master or the slave cylinder was jammed but then the fluid level would have dropped? would have lost it passed the seals? Is there anyway the servo assist could have caused it? :helpsign:

You have a probkem with either your clutch master cylinder or the slave without a doubt. The fact that there is no sign of fluid leaking anywhere is very strange.
look carefully at the top of the clutch pedal where tbe master cylinder is bolted to the firewall on the inside of the vehicle and see if you can spot any brake fluid

I also think it is the master cylinder and maybe there is some dirt in it.

Ok will do, but would have thought if either of the cyls were jammed causing the pedal to drop to the floor then the clutch would have disengaged and i lose drive? the clutch fluid level is still just above the full mark, 'Im sure it would have been a lot lower if leaking?

It can also be an internal leak in the slave and now the fluid sits on the other side of the piston

I'm 99% shure that is the piston seal inside the master. I know this problem in Germany.
The price for a new one with good quality should be arround 1000 Rand (here from 60 - 110 Euro, but 3.0 Di)
You can change it by yourself, not a big thing.

HI Stefan, nope not fixed yet. I been very busy at work and actually forgot completely about it. I drove up to Windhoek last weekend and it started its nonsense again. I got out and poured water over the vacuum cyl body and the master cyl - got back in and the clutch was OK again - strange as definately no leak and no clutch slippage indicating piston binding.

Unless I'm missing a heat shield for the master cyl and the fluid is getting too hot? I'm not sure what to do right now - left the Troll and X cape in windhoek and came back to work. WIll do a month long trip in Nam over Oct - Nov.

It happened again 3 more times before I got to Whk but as I was on a long open stretch, I just changed gear without the clutch when I needed another gear. It seems to be heat related - maybe I should change the fluid anyway to Dot 3 or 4?

I'm looking for a seal kit or complete master cyl / slave cyl just in case. The wife will be joining me next month so I have some time to find parts. Does anyone know the Name and contact details of the place in Brakenfel that stocks Patrol spares?

Thanx
Ernie

You can give Masterparts a call (021) 957 5757

If they can't help you, book you car in with Frans (Tour de Frans) - he is excellent.
