thanx for replies

i will look into these filters. the thing is I only drive on 10ppm diesel. it was only the one tank filled at the depot. this is also the same 3.0zd motor that is used in my patrol. so its not a new engine and should be able to handle dirty fuel. it has always had a single diesel filter. This split in filters is a recent addition and seems that these new filters cant cope with the diesel. so i am in discussion with Nissan for a modification back to the old filter system. i cant afford having these problems when I am in the far corners of south africa or across the borders.

I got rid of the prado so that I have a more robust old tech vehicle with no frills. so with a set of filters Nissan has managed to turn a Machine into a pet.

I have enough pets. :rolling: I need a Machine that can function under all conditions.

Josh,
The use of an aftermarket pre filter is common practice for most trucking operators that go long distance is Africa.
The type I use is a very simple unit consisting of a mount housing with the feed pipe connected at each side and a canister screw on filter/water trap.
They are designed to remove the worst impurities and prolong the life of the o e filter. It is a Cummins approved system and the filter canisters are readily available.
I have towed many diesel vehicles with terminal engine failures due to water in the fuel back to base in the "undeveloped" countries north of us.
The most spectacular was a Puma Land rover. The engine pre ignited when shut off and over revved in reverse burning sump oil to termination. Eina!

The filter to use is a Fleetguard SF1212 with the correct mount.

Ek kry dit by n grootmaat verskaffer in Pretoria.
Sal by hom uitvind of daar iemand in Bloemfontein is , anders laat weet jy my wat jy soek en ons reel dat dit by jou uitkom.

Chris,
I will take pictures and post them. I also have a Cummins desk almanac that shows the products and dealer outlet detail. Will scan and post it later today.

The other Chris.

These pictures show them the best. Here it is fitted to a 80kva Volvo Penta generator set.
This engine runs very clean and conforms to European emission standards. This engine has done about 500 hours with this setup fitted. (obviously I change the cartridge at each service - 200 hours)

It would be best to consult the sales people at cummins to get the best filter option that will be compatible with the application.
With petrol vehicles , water removal is a problem as the properties of petrol and water are similar and the filter will let some water through and these filters are primarily designed for diesel.

Bogeyman thanx for the suggestion on replacement filters. unfortunately no mods can be done because of the guarantee.

The work shop manager removed the diesel water filter and cut it open. I stood by during all this. he found serious pieces of dirt and stuff inside. so looks like the depot diesel in Durban was very dirty. they replaced the filter so the car is now as per factory. i kept the bridge piece for in case. my aim is now to try and drive it empty with the filter in place.

keep you posted :salute:

Hi Josh, I'm new here. Bought a 2014 diesel Patrol with 10 000km as Demo Model a couple of months ago and have done about 7 000 km since then. On 3 occasions it has died on me with the tank just above 1/4. Needs to be primed via the hand pump and then goes again without adding fuel. Can you please give me the names of people at Nissan who sorted out your problem. I'd like to pass it on to my dealer so that they don't have to re-invent the wheel when I take it in.
