limp mode on 30 tdi
Hi out there
It would be great if I could get as much advice on this as possable please . My 30 tdi 2001 trol keeps going into limp mode . I have a madman egt and the boost pressure can go from 12 psi to 24 and overboost in seconds and thats while the vehicle is cold and just started for the first time of the day ! Sometimes when it "limps" losing all power completely and then regaining acceleration it emmits a cloud of exhaust fumes , but not everytime . It has also cut out completely on 4 seperate occations . Would hate any of this to happen on the open road !!!! If I take her on a long level road at say 120 kmph she revs at about 2500 pm but the revs fluctuate up and down consistently by about 2 to 300 revs pm . It almost feels like fuel starvation . I notice there is an electric inline fuel pump installed but doesnt seem connected . Is this after market or standard ? Please any advice or contact no for the Right mechanic . I'm relocating back to limpopo / waterberg (vaalwater ) early december , a 2000km plus trip and am already nervous . Thanks . Nick

The ECU that the 3,0 Patrol [until end 2002 ] came with was set for Europe and the SA condtions messe3s with those things brains .. they then OVER fuel, burning a hole [or more]
Take the VIN number to a bigger NISSAN Dealer .. have thenm check if your car qualifies fior an ECU compter replacement [be tough .. they will try to bullshit you of "not knowng about it " and some such shirbet.
O K .. IF not due .. they MUST reset the ECU to correct settings for SA .
By now your pistons are damaged on top. The rings are warn and you have lots of diesel in your sump..
Consider replacing the PISTONS, and RIINGS [you CAN do that without pulling the engine] Buy your parts from ALERT ENGINE Spares [100,000 Km Guarantee]
THEN you CHIP that 3,0, do a complete freeflow & branches .. and you wil run with the 4,8's but only use 10 KPL / diesel ..
Speak to REENEN Kritzinger about the techno stuff
ALSO very NB - that VNT Turbu by now needs a "Kit overall" .. I only know Jan Visser at Turbo Works .. [Centurion / Pretoria East] he even might have an exchange unit in stock for you 012 653 2295
Oh -- the INJECTORS must be callibrated as well .. use a reputable BOSCH agency near you.

Hi Nic,
My Patrol exhibited very similar behavior a while ago, turned out to have been the can-bus module on the injector pump and not the ecu.
Can I suggest you give Frans (Tour de Frans) a call (0ag34nul9250nege)?

No idea, but if it was petrol you could simply smell it, maybe the same applies?

Hi kagiso II and Tinus . My grenade exoploded with the previouse owner and the motor was overhauled and also the madman instaled . She doesnt smoke at all only on the few times when accelerating after a limp . So with my limited knowledge I cant see the pistons and rings being a prob otherwise it would smoke continualy ????? Stefan , what on earth is a can -bus module ? I realy am a total novice esp with a complicated diesel motor . Thanks in advance .
