You can also take out the switch on the diff to make sure it is clean - I had to clean mine because the pin did not move.

One of the vacume pipes was also blocked and I had to cut off a piece and replace it with a rubber pipe.

Tiny, a couple of questions first:
1) is the vehicle in 4L
2) Have you tried driving slowly in a circle or weaving from side to side?
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

My 98 Patrol het dieselfde probleem gehad, was toe die skakelaar op die dash wat nie mooi kontak gemaak het nie.
Uitgehaal en mooi skoongemaak, einde van probleme.
Soos genoem moet die Patrol in low range wees!!

I may be mistaken (and I will check to night) but I am pretty sure on the Y61 the diff lock can engage in either 4H and 4L?!
Just the Y60 that can do it in 2H which the Y61 cannot do.

My 4.5 can engage the Diff Lock in 4H and 4L. Attached is the diff-lock layout.

The vacuum comes fro the engine. It is swished between locked and open with a solenoid valve on the left side of the car via the control in the cabin. It then runs to the actuator in the back. There is an electrical switch on the diff with the actuator. Anny of these can give a problem. Take some compressed air and clean the piping. Q20 the switch and electro/contactor clean the cabin switch.

Good Luck
