Re: New windscreen for GU / Y61
I've heard that one can get a top tinted windscreen from Botswana for about R800 ( if memory serves me correctly )..... but I doubt that is SABS approved. I don't know if I want to take that chance.
What windscreen do the 4.8's take? I cant imagine that there is any body difference between the newer 4.8's body and the older ( pre face lift ) body shapes. As far as I am aware its only the cosmetics and light cluster changes. Would be nice if someone could confirm this!!

Re: New windscreen for GU / Y61
If I remember correctly I paid R800. But it is clear glass - I would recommend the tint at the top though. Does anyone know what happened to Dennis Mayton? Is he still at Megaworld in Somerset West?

Re: New windscreen for GU / Y61
Fitted yesterday
SABS approved with the top tinted, 6 months warranty.
R1550.
Insurer in my case pays 100%
I could have gone to one of the insurer's "preferred" providers at about 7,000 each for Glassfit and PG.
But thats just wrong.

Re: New windscreen for GU / Y61
Russ, There isn't a seal on the glass so to speak. They apply a black goo to the metal around the aperture, then the glass seals on that. There is however an inner rubber/plastic trim that holds the outer rubber/plastic trim ( the outer trim is flat across the top of the windscreen between the metal of the roof and the glass and has a "channel" looking strip down each side, presumably to guide water down to the bottom of the windscreen) that the glass jockey's seem to mess the black goo onto. If they do mess this go onto the inner trim, the outer trim doesn't fit snug into the little channel that the outer trim clips into. Over time while driving this outer trim gets caught by the wind and pulls loose and flaps around.
Mine is a problem on the snorkel side. I didn't bother taking it back immediately as the snorkel deflects the wind sufficiently to prevent it from flapping around. I took it back to the guy that did the installation a few weeks back as I have a new crack in the windscreen and they said they would happily sort it out. So I think unless the rubber is damaged it can be repaired/cleaned.
