Middag Frans

Dis mooi vir party mense, my inkluis.

Irrespective of what Frans has said, remember this: a chip is primarily a system that allows you more control over the factory settings. Yes it comes with a set of "factory" setings, but these are not necessarily ideal for your engine/environment, and may be little better than the original.

As such, the skill of the person who enters the new values is crucial. Do it wrong and you can very easily end up with a broken motor.

Frans is one of very few tuners I have met who will tell you not to waste your money. Some others will sell you the chip, then make some adjustments that they know are not ideal in terms of reliability, just to show a gain on the dyno and thereby justify the money they are charging you.

Furthermore, it is very important that they understand your usage of the car/engine. If the timing is advanced to the maximum, and you then get lower-octane fuel in your ramblings in darkest Africa, you could brake it too.

Thanks Frans. The above has been most informative.

What are your ideal specs for a 4,5 exhaust? I have a 3 box system put on by Maus about 12 years ago and it seems a bit restrictive for my liking.

For the guys with the older petrol Patrols if it starts getting sluggish at lower revs and pienging check your leads from sparkplugs to distributor. Nissan leads are just over R 2 k but ex Japan with 3 week plus wait. "Bougi Cords" are available at R 600 per set. And the difference between the old(if shot) and new is priceless. They may look fine like mine did, but touch them while the motor is running and you will find out very quickly if there is a problem.

Mine also had a chip which was installed over 10 years ago but the previous owner removed it and said that he had felt no difference with or without. Probably because the timing had been set without the mechanic knowing about the chip.

Frans - The VG30 in the Hardbody and Sani gets big gains at low to medium revs from a chip if you have opened up the breathing, reprofiled the cams and gas flowed the head but also has "old school" electronics. Is it just the aircon system that is different and if so is there no way of changing that setting so that it does not advance the timing when the aircon is switched on in the Patrol?

I am looking for a nice gain between 2000 and 3000 revs on the 4,5 and have been thinking of going the chip route but am not sure.

Mini Patrol
The exhaust for the 4.5 is simmilar to the 4.8. Althou a 76 mm wont make a huge diffirance.
50mm to 57mm choke in the front. Remember the first box to be the size of the rest of the system. 63mm to the back with 2 boxes. This made the best power vs sound.
I would like to add,. the choke, some people would pull up their shoulders. Yes its wrong if the engine was reving over 6000rpm.
The VG30, the same for the distribitor/ chip setting. The Ac does not make a diffirance on the timeing.
Those 3l v6's are very underrated. Its a strong engine. Only becarefull for to wild on the cams , it will steal power @ 2000 to 3000 rpm.
