MAF faulty
Hi all.
I got a wonderful response concerning my engine number. Thank you once again.
I have discovered today that my lack of power on my Nissan Patrol is due to a faulty MAF. Apparently, on pin one, the red wire, there should be a voltage of between 1.6 and 2 volts at idle, increasing with the revs. Mine reads 1 volt and decreases with the revs. I do have a spare, but it reads 2.45 volts but does increase when reved. It also does not allow the turbo to spool up above half a bar although there is a very noticeable increase in power.
I will have to get another one here in Durban and fit it. My question to you guys, are the above voltages, ie 1.6 to 2 volts correct? Apart from the agents, where can I source a MAF and does anybody have the part number?
I have a 2001 3.0 Troll but in 2005, a new engine was fitted but I believe it will be the same MAF. The MAF has 4 pins and not the later 6 pin version.
I am worried about driving the car with the wrong air fuel mixture but have to go to Ponto at the end of the month so it is quite urgent.
Many thanks

Re: MAF faulty
Regarding the voltages.... eish....Me not know, but the 0.5 bar boost on the turbo could be about right. I know on the 4.2 diesels the boost is set at around 0.7 bar max. so it may be just the way it was set, unless it was different prior to trying the other MAF sensor.

Re: MAF faulty
Barry, I replaced the MAF sensor on my Patrol in November last year. See this thread.
I found that the price between Nissan (~R2100 incl VAT) and the other suppliers were quite close, so I decided to go with an OEM part. it took about 3 days for them to get the sensor.
Just make sure you use the correct part number to order, otherwise they will quote you for the entire MAF assembly (~R8k)

Re: MAF faulty
Hi Stefan. Thanks for that. It good to have a graph like that on record as a comparison should I ever have mine put on the dyno.
Would you perhaps have the part number from Nissan. Here in Durban, when I ordered a new 5th gear for the truck, it took 3 tries and the involvement of management before I finally got the correct part. I had thought the OME part would have been more expensive so am glad to learn otherwise. I too would prefer OME. The ozzies say the part number is 22680AD21A but I would prefer getting a part number here in SA.
Do you have a boost guage? if so what reading do you get at, say between 2500 and 3000. My boost was around .6 bar and .7 ish. It would reach 1bar when accelerating but I had turned the vin screw down to stop the over boost problems that the trolls are notorious for.
Regards.

Re: MAF faulty
Gupst - yu order the MAF with your vehicle's VIN number . then you should get the REAL one.
And as Stefan said - make sure they only order the INSERT
BUT -- before you buy new one -- Clean the current one [ELECTRO CLEEN or carb cleaner use Spanjaar Carb cleaner --
CAREFULL - don't damage them tiny draadjies inside :-)
Hold the can about 200mm away from the sensor, spray and the wait for it to dry [don't blow on it - don't shake it ]
[ek bedoel die MAF sensor
You may have to buy the special tool te remove the screws holding it in place - the wires just clip off the plug. [looks like an Allan Key - but more corners and it is hollow inside.
You in Durb's ?? make contact with Jules and Andre down there .. Jules also know lots of technical stuff/

Re: MAF faulty
Thank you Kagiso. I have tried the CRC spray but with no success. I had massive problems in Guinea and resorted to cleaning the MAF with a cotton bud. It was that or have it trucked to Conakry and shipped home to Durban. I now know that the cotton bud was the wrong move, but at least I was able to get out of Guinea.
Unfortunately its a UK Nissan and had a engine change in 2005 so my VIN number causes raised eyebrows at Nissan SA. I will however try tomorrow and see what they say because what you say makes sense. I will also get in touch with the contacts you mentioned as it will be really nice to get experienced advice.
Kind regards

Re: MAF faulty
Hi Stefan. Just collected and fitted new MAF. Very happy, I had forgotten how well the Troll pulls and the old MAF must have been deteriorating slowly and losing power over the last 2 years. Glad you confirmed the part number, thank you, as to lay out R2000 and then find the Ozzies are different, would have been an expensive mistake. Got it from Nissan Pinetown.
Cheers
