Water tank Opinion
Hi There
I am hoping to get some opinions here regarding on where to put a water tank in the troll. I got a 60L Pioneer plastic water tank as a gift and now sit with the question of where to install it as most of the options comes with a compromise.
1. On the roof rack - Tank exposed to the sun so you end up with hot water and the end of a nice summers day. Which might be nice if you concidering a quick shower but not so good from having a drink point of view
2. In the cargo bay - This sacrifice valuable packing space.
The only best of both worlds solution I have come up with is to fold up the back seat behind the driver as it is hardly ever used. I leveled out the floor difference with a little platform I built so the tank has a firm base all the way through. This way I am using the space otherwise taken up by an unused seat end it reduces the space it consumes in the cargo area.
1. It still obviously takes some packing space
2. Not a 100% "permanent solution" as it will have to be taken out if the need for the additional passenger seat arises.
Is on the roof as bad as I think. Is there any other creative ideas?
Thanks
Jacques

Re: Water tank Opinion
Jacques -- QUESTION - do you want this placement to be permanent ?
I have NO problem having it on the roof rack - B-coz. (1) I take 10 liter [5 p/person] inside the car for DRINKING water. This i draw early morning before the Africa sun gets to it.
Then - when I stop lunch time -- less gas / fuel to heat water for koffi [NEVER tea ]
Afternoon, same advantage -- quicker to get warm water for cooking & washing. That 10 ltre inside the car starts on it's own so you start with 70 litre [that gives you a safe water margin for 7 days / 2 people if you go deeeeeeep in da Africa bush
You can cover your tank with "Ozite Carpet" which also keeps it cool -- And also - it does NOT heat up that much - In Botswana, at 42 deg late afternoon I still drank water from the tank on roof .. Not COOL, but not that bad either [maar dit was anders -- ons was 5 in die kar en daar was nie plek vir nog water in die kar nie en ek was murr dors]

Re: Water tank Opinion
a More permanent solution would be more preferable.
I think based on the logic used in your reply my mind might be made up. Never actually analyzed it that way.

Re: Water tank Opinion
I know you have the plastic tank, but another idea..... My patrol never came out with the sub tank option, but some clever person had a stainless steel 60 litre tank made up with baffles inside to stop sloshing water under the Patrol where the sub tank should sit.
I want to get another tank made up to fit on the other side ( passenger side ) for water and change my current water tank into a 60 litre diesel tank. I would need to reroute the exhaust a bit to accommodate the new tank though.
Advantage is that your center of gravity is way down low, whereas an extra 60Kg plus tank weight ( even though its plastic ), depending on what you are driving on can have a negative effect, even cornering hard...... just my 2cents worth

Re: Water tank Opinion
I have a 50lt water tank fitted between my drawer system and the middle row seats. This is a semi-permanent installation which works well for me. The third row of seats have been removed.

Re: Water tank Opinion
I did a little test the other day - removed the second row passenger seats completely, instead of folding them fully forward (just wife and i when we travel). The result is a whole lot of extra space - then having a 60ltr tank inside is no problem at all!

Re: Water tank Opinion
Jaque -- mi 1/2 pennie -- IF I* have to carry water inside the car, I travel with 20 or 25 litre containers [Jerry can shape] The I ONLY fill what i will need till the next water source [plus emergency 'get stuck'] Because then the empty cans go wherever convenient - even roofrack and then I dont have the top heavy effect.
BUT when I go with larger groups on Outreach - that big tank goes onnnnnnnn topppp [NOT Inside ] Plus each person carries min 2-litre but prefer 5 litre [hy moet maar self plek maak daarvoor :-) ]
for a more permanent option - like in your case - I would fit that thing on the roof rack.

Re: Water tank Opinion
Inside is cool if you are only two? How do you intend getting the water out the tank?

Re: Water tank Opinion
The 60 lt tank is normally a rectangular tank.
