Trailer Coupling

Post by Clem »

Guys, having bought the Metalian Mini why it is that here in South Africa we tend to use a standard trailer coupling whereas in Australia they seem to have a preference for the multi-jointed type off road coupling which offers far greater articulation. I now find myself wondering whether the Mini will in fact be able to fully follow my Patrol when the terrain gets really interesting and whether or not I should be thinking of obtaining a Hyman type coupling with 3.5 tow ball (the Hyman coupling requires a longer shank than on the 2.5 tow ball). Any thoughts or input would be much appreciated.

I could be wrong about this, but I suspect that by the time you are exceeding the angular travel of the standard hitch with a typical overlanding trailer (which tend to have fairly high centres of gravity) you might well be in trouble anyway?

Oom Mac (Kagiso) sort of half-rolled his trailer on Van Zyl's pass a few years ago. I could be wrong here, but I reckon if he had one of these couplings, both trailer and car would have ended up lying at the bottom of the mountain, bacause the standard hitch caught the trailer before it could get any momentum built up?
