Mutter, mutter...dummy tail lights

Post by Clem »

So the other day I take a good look at the tail lights on my vehicle and I realise that only the ones in the bumper are actually working lights – the others next to the doors are simply dummies – they have no bulbs (something I am given to understand is seen in other makes of vehicles as well). Says me to self "What kind of stupidity is this?". So off I go to the local dealership and hang over the computer screen together with the guy at the spares department. He types in the VIN number of the vehicle and it shows replacement tail-lights, complete with electrical harness and globes. These are duly ordered and paid for, at no small expense. I get a call from the fellow today. The replacements have arrived and… Lo and behold, they are also dummies. Now he is trying to sort something out!

Hi Clem

I remember this topic being raised in an earlier post. Reason? If I remember correctly it had something to do with the spare wheel partially blocking the right rear lights - SA traffic legislation - or something like that. I actually had mine done when I replaced my bumper, but something you could easily tackle yourself on a Sat morning. Makes a BIG difference having the additional lights.

Hi Clem

Have a look at this:

http://patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f= ... ght#p26135

I have also done my lights. Cost me no more than R200 for connectors and bulbs. I used these connectors:

Put some silicone in to prevent a short in water. I also put some nice LED bulbs in. You can order the lights from Aus with connectors and light fittings. Not sure what the cost is.

Oh, sorry. Here is an e-bay link:

Hope this helps.

Many thanks John. It turns out that it is actually an Australian legal issue, not a South African one.

Kind regards,
Clem

Thank you Marino. I am now just wondering (a) whether to hope that the parts guy will not find the correct part and I will get a refund and (b) whether the 2010 units will fit on my vehicle.

Clem, ask for your money back and save yourself the cost. I did mine with a very minor mod - the electrical wiring is right there and you just drill a hole big enough into the plastic wall at the back of the light housing and slip in a bulb fitting that costs about R20 each. Works a treat. A nice Saturday morning project. :oldtimer:

I did it to mine a few years back, then my boss clipped the back of the Iron Maiden and broke the lens on the back left tail light. Luckily Wilfred ( forum member was in the UAE at the time and he bought on my behalf the tail lights that already have the globes and connectors in.... basically plug and play/drive. The best was that it was, if I recall half the price of the SA ones that are globe-less dummies.

I still have the old tail lights, so I'll take a few pics of the setup and post then here. It really is an easy process and the hardest part for me was getting the courage to cut the existing plug on the wiring harness to connect the Midas globe holders to.
