LSD Problem

G-day Gents,

My Patrol doesn't work hard. Its a '96 GQ Diesel (sac turbo) with 126K km on the clock( I think there was a 'hair cut' involved)
Anyways, it was standing at home wilst me and SWAMBO took a short break down to George in the Platkar. So for 2 weeks the Troll hasn't been ridden. Drove it this past weekend and found a slight vibration when pulling off in a turn, it wasn't there before. Pulling off in a straight line is fine. The vibrations is worse when I put foot and let the turbo talk a bit.
I had a suspicion its the LSD and my gearbox specialist friend confirmed it.

I was reading the thread about LSD oil changes and using the correct oil, I found that Castrol's LSX( now called XLZ or something) is a mineral based oil, the more expensive one called ThinTrax 75W140 is a full sinthetic oil @ R1100 for 10L(from my lube suplier).

My questions are:
1. Will an oilchange help? The previous oil in the diff was something like Taurus GL5 or something, I don't know if it is LSD oil.
2. Has anybody else experienced anything like this before? Do I need to stress about huge expenses?
3. Could having fitted 33" tires be the culprit, since this occured shortly after fitting the tires?

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same Troll as you with a LSD that SAC filled with normal diff oil. Had the oil replaced and still LSD does not work. I have not bothered to have it fixed as I have enough articulation.

I suspect it is your tyres. Which brand did you fit and what size ?

The LSD is currently working, but I suspect the problem of it not working is slowly creeping in. Dastec in Centurion had put that GL5 oil in about 10K km ago.

Could it be the diff that is slipping and gripping intermittently at a fairly high frequency hence the vibrations?

I had the tires on for about 1500km, they're old (5-6years) but still new? (1500km) BF All terrain 33"

I had done De Wildt once and no Problems with the tires. But maybe it could be the cause....

There is prolly no quick fix for this here problem, but I was thinking the oil change and wash with paraffin like in the other LSD Oil thread might do the trick since I need the vehicle for this weekend.

You must use the Castrol's LSX!

Any other oil will not let the LSD work.

Castrol het n volle sintetiese LSD olie, die ThinTrax 75W140(multigrade), beter as die minerale LSX (monograde SAE 90) En duurder ook. Sal dit dan nie beter werk nie?

Toe die Safari's en die Patrol's met LSD gebou was was net die LSX olie beskikbaar en dit het gewerk.

Die nuwe LSD'd werk anders as ons LSD's en hulle het seker die nuwe olie nodig.

Ek sal hou by die LSX!

Please accept my apology, The LSD oil I was referring to is called Syntrax Limited Slip 75W-140, not Thintrax

Ek hoor jou, ek is maar skugter om iets nuuts te probeer, maar Castrol sê die sintetiese olie word goedgekeur vir gebruik in BMW se M klas asook Mercedes se AMG wat LSD's het, en ek lees nou Nissan se GTR ook!

Ek gaan die olie probeer en dan julle laat weet.

Andre, the problem you describe is one I have only previously experienced in race cars where the LSD's are purposely set up much more aggresively than is normal for road use. It is thus in fact a sign that your LSD is perhaps working a bit too well.

When an LSD goes, it generally creates less friction.

I would replace the oil, but if the problem remains about the same I probably wouldn't worry too much. However, if it gets worse you probably need to strip it and make sure the adjustment hasn't come loose?

Also, Jack the one side of the rear axle just of the ground. Engage low range and release clutch. If Troll moves forward, bob your uncle. If not, you now need a repair.

What is the mileage on your troll ?
