Gasflow and freeflow on TD42 motor

Post by jcc »

Hi all

I recently bought a 1998 4.2d GL Patrol and up to know I'm very happy. I intend using the vehicle for touring, camping etc off the beaten track and not as much for donga driving etc. I would however appreciate more power on the open road. I prefer the route of increasing efficiency by reducing pumping losses etc; without changing the character of the motor or adding complexity.

Does anyone have experience with freeflow exhuasts and/or gasflowing the head on this motor. What works? What and who should I avoid? I live in Wellington and will obviously look for someone around Cape Town or Bellville area to do the work.

I will appreciate your help.

Regards

JCC

There is restriction in the exhaust out of the turbo. Source an aftermarket dump pipe that is 3" internal size. Then fit a 3" exhaust with a straight through muffler. You will be amazed at the difference. Get a manual boost control valve (Ebay Aust.), set it at 12lbs. and fit that as well-a simple task. Then fit an exhaust gas temp. gauge and a boost gauge. With these in place it is now safe to find a trusted dyno tuner to tweak the fuel, timing etc. Do not allow the EGT to climb over 550C under load. Good luck.

Portal Pat, note that JCC has a naturally aspirated 4.2 diesel patrol and not a turbocharged 3.0 diesel, so most of the complexities and worries that you mention don't apply to his situation  .

Ah ha! Perhaps the heading should not have read TD42? LOL.

Hi Jacques,

Turbo and Intercooler. This set up works very well. I have a Safari system on my 4.2 diesel with a 3" straight through exhaust (sounds great). Very important to fit a EGT, and add coolent temp as well as oil pressure and temp. After fitting a bigger radiator the engine also runs much cooler.

The TD42 thing is confusing for us here too Pat. I know that from 1998 to beginning 2000, here in South Africa, we have only ever gotten the non turbo version of the 4.2 Diesel but still the motor is called a TD 42... .... My Patrol and many others have the turbos fitted aftermarket. Grant for example has the Australian import ST 4.2 diesel, which if I'm not mistaken was designed to accommodate a turbo. Again forgive me if I'm wrong, this is the 4.2 with the silver tappet cover, which I think is the standard TD42 for you guys over there. The N/A version we get here ( black tappet cover ) is bullet proof even with the aftermarket turbo fitted, but with a gentle right foot to control the EGT's. I think the heads we get/have here are slightly different to your turbo versions too.

Unfortunately they went over to the 3.0 TD in 2000......

Ahhhh,,,, but like my mate Grant says..... you can't beat cubic inches !!!! ..... LONG LIVE THE 4.2 DIESEL !!!...
