Fuel consumption experiment

Post by GLAGS »

What a big Patrol Topic.

Just finished an experiment with my 4.8GRX 2004 model with no mods.

1) Drove 109Liters of Fuel out
a) Never once took revs over 2000rpms, and did not "flood" engine but applied accelerator very gently and evenly.
b) Total mileage achieved 511km
c) 4.68L/km
d) 21.33L/100km
e) All mileage was to work and back.

2) Drove 111Liters of Fuel out
a) Never once took revs over 3500rpms, and did not "flood" engine but applied accelerator very gently and evenly.
b) Total mileage achieved 526km
c) 4.74L/km
d) 21.10L/100km
e) All mileage was to work and back.

Had a major service at NISSAN Parow in between the two samples. Changed a coil and two sparks.

Conclusion:
a) not much affects this baby's consumption & one disheartened owner.
b) dont belive that stat in the SA4x4 of some dude achieving 18.2l/100km with his 4.8GRX

P.S. Death wobble has just disappeared for the last 5000km's. 152000kms on odo. in love with my trollie.

Glags

Lots of stop /start in your trip to work ? Normal size tyres?roofrack?

I work on 6.2 - 6.6km/l on my Truck ( '95 SGL 4.2petrol ) that is work and back 21km one way but not to many stops, I am possibly looking at upgrading to a 4.8 GRX in 6months time so it would be good to get some feedback from the other 4.8 Trol drivers.

Stefan's right - that puts you at the upper end of the diesel consumption territory!

I presume your odometer/trip counter is accurate?

My odo is actualy under reading by 4%. This could improve the readings marginally.

Glags, your death wobble is most likely and unbalanced wheel, or panhard rod bush. Get teh wheels balanced properly -I prefer the finger adapter and not the cone.

As for the 4.8 thirst that is what the 4.8 stands for 4.8km/l and whether your drive it like it's stolen or not it will remain in the same ballpark

Best I got is 5.8 km/l (17.3l/100km) sitting @ 125km/h GPS speed and this is with 33" BFG Mud's. My overall average is 4.6km/l since I bought the Patrol and my worst consumption is 3.32km/l :surprised: :rolling:

Have been averaging 21 - 22l per 100 km on open road (JHB to Britstown / JHB to Fouriesburg / JHB to Ellisras / JHB to Kroonstad etc). I drive at approx 110 - 120 kmph on average, have roof rack fitted and large BFG M/Ts. Consumption seems to be constant and very close to my pals Cruiser 4500 EFI.

Will soon be taking my boat to Moz as weather warms up - am expecting to consumption to worsen somewhat .... will post results here.
