Y60 Weber 38 Conversion

Hi All,

Not sure how many of you have already done this modification. But after struggling with flat spots and low power above 3000rpm and "'n nukkigerige Patrol" in 5th gear cruising and so called expert machanics at performance shops trying to sort it out for the last 6 months.... will not say any names... I made the decision after searching for a carburettor specialist and finding one! to swap the Nikki for a Weber 38.

I visited the carb guy on Saturday we discussed and exchange some ideas, took the Patrol and deposit to him on Sunday afternoon and got it back yesterday afternoon ready for the coming holiday to the coast. The difference in the performance of that 4.2l motor is unbeliveable!!! At this stage fuel consumption will not be good, enjoying the new sound of that motor too much at the moment.

Now, there is a few decisions to be made in the new year regarding the air cleaner and Safari snorkel. Currently the carburettor got a 10" pancake filter on, and I actually like it. To fit the standard air cleaner housing on top of the Weber the base needs to be modified. Now here I would like some input from the knowlegible members of the forum on the following;

1. The Safari snorkel is now blowing fresh air into the engine bay the old air cleaner and pipes is disconnected just after the cyclone pre-air filter(I think that is what it is called), i don't think this will have any disadvantage?
2. Modifying the std air cleaner housing will this be feasible/do-able?

I will post some pictures of the new Weber and give some feedback on the fuel consumption after the holiday trip.

I had a 38 on my old 2.8 Safari and they really are great.

Why don't you just fit an adapter on the Weber which will take the pipe from the cyclone filter?

The cyclone filters much better than those pancakes.

haij daa Rudolph - in my boekie sou ek sterkste aanbeveel om 'n DONALDSON daar links voor te installeer [regs as jy voor die karrikji staan] - dieselle Donaldson as wat in die VG30 Nissans kom - en dan dat Noize Voys of Fibre plekkie vir jou pype opmaak wat pas tussen die carb en die lugfilter en die snorkel [het so 'n Donaldson op Lobo se 2,8 gesit - en die verskil was byna 10Kw ... ek is 'n heppi cheppi met daai Donaldson

Hier is 'n spaar 38 weber in my graats - wil iemand aanbod maak [met manifold vir 2,8 Nissan engine] ??

Looks good. Must soud great. I treis to fit a Donaldson filter in my Diesel troll, with no luck. No Space.

eisjjj = Grant, oompie see what yu mean with "no space" - I was seeing Lobo in me minds eye [LOTS of space in that engine bay - 5'4" mekki climbed in there the other day...

Nice one! I would have thought a 38 is a bit small for a 4.2, but that is probably good for bottom end though? How did they fit the Weber to the manifold, did they just make a bolt-on adaptor plate?
I think the best bet is to adapt the old filter housing, but I am not sure exactly what is involved. Can you post a picture of the bottom part of the old filter on top of the Weber?

OOm Mac ek dink ons gaan moet praat oor daai Weber. Ek is lankal 'n Weber fan, ek het hulle al op vier verskillende karre karre gehad en nog nooit enige moeilikheid nie.

Hi All,

Feedback on the fuel consumption, it is still the same as it was but with lots more power on the inclines and cruising speeds. I averaged 4.8km/l fully loaded from J'burg to Shelly Beach and back, this included driving the back roads and in and around towns along the cost line.

Peter, the adaptor plate is standard and fits a 2.4l nissan manifold if not mistaken, the port holes was bored out to get better air flow in. And yes, there is plenty low down power and torque available. Will get some pictures and post them over the weekend.

Hi All,

After considering a few options I came up the final 3 routes to be explored further; the 3 options are

1. Modify the current air box by welding the base plate of the Weber 38 into the excisting box, keeping an eye on the right angle so the bonnet can close. Space is limited so will need someone that knows what he is doing to do the welding, tight fit. Pictures attached.

2. Buy an adaptor connector to go on top of the Weber and find a donaldson like air box that will fit in the front left corner next to snorkel intake from the fender.

3. Find a Ford/Mazda pancake filter box, with a Weber 38 base and see if it fits and connect it to the snorkel....

Any ideas or recommendations will be welcomed.
