Patrol - daily drive

Post by Oetie »

Who is using his/her Patrol as a daily drive?

I just bought a 2009 TD42 through Thinus, but cannot keep both the Pathy and the Patrol.... wish I could but can unfortunately not do so at the moment.

The Patrol I bought is an ex UN Patrol from Lesotho, stock standard and VERY clean with 140k kms on, so some cash will have to be spent to kit it out, including magical touch by Michael. Photo’s will follow once I have received it, which should be soon.

The Pathy is a 2007 2.5 auto with 300k kms, I bought it on 109k kms and love driving the vehicle. It has a OME suspension, and recently got some TLC with new injectors, turbo and diesel pump. Avg fuel consumption of 10km/l on the open road, a bit heavier in town.

Whatever I keep will be a DKW (dans, kerk, werk) vehicle...

What to do..???

I use my TD42 Patrol as a daily an love it since I am use to parking big vehicles and working close to Mamelodi a small car vs a taxi is quite risky (not that I am referring to the path as small)
I run on bio diesel as a lot of us have been doing lately as supply allows. last night I urgently just had to put in R200 of diesel at sasol to reach home because I just haven had a chance to fill up on bio diesel.... For R200 I got 11L  The Bio diesel ranges from R10.50- R12 per Liter and makes my car affordable to me as a daily.
As for touring the Pathy would simply be cheaper but the Patrol can run on sunflower oil
It looks to me that it might be cheaper to go and tour neighboring countries with their lower fuel price than our own at the moment.
But drive the Patrol alone for a week and get back into the Pathy and I am sure it will feel like a go cart   the Patrol is a huge ship that can conquer the biggest and roughest seas, but I love my boat

My (turboed) TD42 is my daily drive.

for round town trips the Pathfinder will be waaaay more economical. for touring and hard 4x4, the patrol is king

I have two. Both are daily drives.

The 4.8 is the wife's run around for the kids. She needs 4x4 for work, as she is regularly on the canal roads around here. The Hardbody was previously her run-around, but with the daughter's extra murals, she needed a seven seater. Another Patrol was a no-brainer.

My 4.5 is my daily run-around, and the vehicle we use to tour (I just prefer a manual for that).

Obviously, they are both Petrols, and my monthly fuel bill is fairly horrible. But considering I purchased both vehicles cash, I think I am still saving in terms of monthly installments and insurance (a lot cheaper for the trols than other vehicles I have owned).

Some people say I am mad to own two such gas guzzlers. I probably am. But there is not another vehicle I want to drive. And I reckon that it is my cash keeping the two filled, so I can probably drive what I want.

Hallo Leon,

Jou Patrol, anders as myne, is amper nog nuut!

I used my Iron Maiden for 7 years every day, and only in the last 3 months have I been driving a Kia Sportage around as my daily drive, purely cause it's paid for and is actually now not much cheaper to run than my Patrol. I miss the Iron Maiden EVERY day that I'm not driving it..... it is simply just a completely different beast, and a simple vat nie kak nie chickmagnet for taxi drivers. They seem to get all shy and timid when they see a Patrol approaching them with speed.....oh and a big plume of black diesel smoke coming out the exhaust

I drive the 4.8 on Monday’s and Tuesday’s. Best days of the week for me. I’m so relaxed when I get home after driving it, even my wife comments on how nice I am when I get home after I’ve driven it. :rolling:

Hopefully there will be a td42 in the garage soon, and then I’ll use it everyday.

Ricster, funny you mention the taxi thing, it’s amazing to see the respect I get in it. Had to teach a taxi a lesson just this morning at a robot that was out.
