Disco 1 & 2
Hi Guys,
So... I drive a Patrol... but I want to buy a 'cheap' weekend toy...
I have seen a nice Land Rover Discovery 1 3.9 V8 Jaguar engine for 31 000. The vehicle is in Margate (Ocean Breeze????) and has 250 000 km on the clock. Is this too much? How much mileage can this engine, diffs and drive train components take? The lady says the car needs a service because he hasn't had one in a while (Why???) but claims that the vehicle has no mechanical issues. Does anyone know these mechanics? How touch are the Solid axle Disco 1's? What about the Disco 2 V8? Are they better? ITO capability: how capable are these vehicles in relation to a Patrol?
Thanks...

Re: Disco 1 & 2
I have never owned one, or even driven one. I have sat passenger in them, looked underneath them and seen them try to do obstacles that I do in 2wd.
As far as I am concerned, it is a down-grade in every possible department except perhaps fuel consumption.

What worries me most is the sounds coming from under the a drive train and then it doesnt go anywhere but you end up with broken sideshafts...

You guys are right. Read up about it last night. Seems that even the mechanical V8 with less electronics than 2 has some issues. I am not in the mood for consistent repairs day in and out. I'll give it a skip. I am looking for an 4.2 box shape now!

I think that's a wise choice, especially if you want a weekend toy. You actually want to enjoy the vehicle and not spend your weekend fixing itJohann 1984 wrote:You guys are right. Re: Disco 1 & 2
Hay Hay Hay don't knock the older landies!! I have had about 5 Disco 1"s over the years and all but one (Immobilizer fault) have never let me down. I would stay away from the Disco 2's just too many electrics in them. The Disco 1 is based on the range rover classic which has bead manufactured since the early 70's so has had all the problems ironed out over the years. There have been some problems reported with broken side shafts but more on the series landies and the defenders. I think it is the most comfortable SUV I have ever driven (more so than my Disco 4 and my 4.8 Patrol) The driving position for me is perfect Fuel consumption is about the same as the 4.2 patrol, parts are cheap and easy to get for R31K I would say that is a good deal

Going to struggle to get a 4.2 Patrol for sub 50k, there are a few bargains that come up but they are usually taken very quickly.

Re: Disco 1 & 2
If I remember correctly those v8's are still Rover motors. The Jag motors were only used in the later models. Those Rover motors have been pretty much the same from something like the 70's until it was retired a few years ago.Johann 1984 wrote:Even with 250 km on the clock? How long do those Jag V8's last?
