Thanks Guys, these answers takes out any concerns that one might have. Although the car has quite low mileage (125 000 Km) one never knows what happened during it's previous life. I therefore agree that the best will be to change coils together with the shocks.

Regards.

You don't need to upgrade your suspension to fit 285/7R16s

Stefan, I guess that is another important point worth pointing out: a good, moderate (up to 4") suspension lift does not allow you to use larger tires than can be fitted with standard suspension.

This is because the suspension can still travel all the way to the bump stops, which have not been moved or modified by the lift kit.

To fit tires that are larger than would fit on a standard vehicle, you need to do one or more of the following:
1) Move the bump stops (which may in turn reduce suspension travel to less than standard, so not normally recommended)
2) Enlarge the wheel arches, or
3) Fit a body lift kit.

Of these, the second option is best, but also most expensive, because it does not compromise the center of gravity any more than is necessary.

But as far as I know, on the Y61 Patrol you can fit up to 35" wheels without having to do any of the above, but with wheels that large performance and fuel consumption will definately be affected.

With the Y60 though, 33" is the limit, and in fact if you fit wide 33"'s you already need to do a few small mods to get them to fit.

Have to agree with Peter , 285/75/16 or 33" fit perfectly in the Y61 wheelarches , had my bakkies 285's on my Y61 over the holidays for a test fit looks good but id only fit them once aive done the suspension also as i doint want to loose any upwards articulation at present by moving the pumpstop to prtoect the body from the bigger wheels even though it doesnt seem as if they will catch anywhere
