Hi All, anyone got a spare 16 Inch GU wheel lying around that that they want to get rid of, does not have to be in great condition, looking for a second spare to put on the Roof Rack??

Just invest in TPMS for about R 2 k and maybe carry an inner tube and there should be no need for that dirty great weight on the roofrack....

I agree with David. Wrecked tyres are a result of driving underinflated or flat. Very Very rarely is a tyre genuinely trashed by a bad sidewall cut. The "blowout" is usually because it was not noticed until the tyre disintegrated.

Or just carry the tyre. You can pack stuff inside it, and if need be can be mounted onto the rim by basic backyard mechanics.

Is it worth getting the really expensive units or are the cheaper options just as capable?

I can not see a difference between the expensive and cheap ones.

The basic differences are;

No of tyres that can be monitored - I needed at least 6 because of the boat
Internal vs external senders - I wanted external so that I do not need to strip tyres to replace batteries on the senders. Of course externally you risk damage (Both I and Alex damaged senders on Baboons) and you can not monitor pressure during inflation/deflation. My solution to this is I am about to put a second set of valves into my steel rims specifically so that I can monitor while inflating or deflating and am going to position them so that the sender is protected (you need to be careful of brake clearance etc doing this). This may not be as easy with mags.
Monitoring unit - I wanted this portable so that I can walk around with the unit while inflating or deflating.

I am using the Tire Guard system that goes for R 2 250 including 6 sensors (half the price of 1 tyre) and my only complaint is that the charger fits into a cigarette socket but am about to get a second set for the Firetruck and want to see if they don't have a USB charger.

I have a tpms on my diesel, it came with the car.

The only issue is that the sensors are sealed units, not possible to change the batteries.

New sensors are R999 each.

Easier to get a new system I recon

Another question I had was... Can the extra sensors be set up on my air-lift system?

OR, if you sometimes travel solo remote as we used to, carry a pair of Tyrepliers and two decent tyre levers. And a decent compressor. I used to carry a spare sheet sheet of thick-ish rubber to bridge big holes and then throw in a inner tube over it. Jy ry maar stadig (ontrent so 30/35/40 as jy durf) maar jy kan darem ry. Saved my whatsit twice. Since then nobody will ever tell me that a BFG is as tough as a decent 12 (or even 8) ply crossply. It's a pity they're so poor at speed on tar though.
