I used fiber tape from Thermolag 50mm x 3mm x 30m roll cost R300. One roll will do a 4.8 branch by two layers. The tape will smoke (looks like car is on fire) till it is burned in properly.

That's exactly what I want to do with mine. just cringing at the thought of battling to get the tape around the down pipes whilst the branch is fitted with my hands !! I like those clamps too!!

So what are the merits?

Besides the overall temperature in the surrounds, this in itself I guess will have an impact on engine temperature?

The reason why I want to do it is due to my second battery sitting right next to the exhaust branches and turbo. If I can reduce the heat transfer by a few degrees it will have a definite positive on the life expectancy of my deep cycle battery. I must just get around to doing it. I'm still toying with the idea to fit the battery under the Patrol, but the space where I want to fit it is really tight and I need to spend a lot of time working it out nicely to prevent any shorting of the poles on the bodywork.

I also believe that this will have a positive impact on the air temperature that comes through the air vents when the aircon is NOT on, as the air intake is right between the firewall behind the turbo and the windscreen.

I don't believe it will have an impact on engine temps though, however on the diesel the temperature measured will be more accurate as no, or very little heat dissipation can take place between the cylinder head and the temp probe. I doubt that the temp difference will be any more than 5 deg C. as its so close to the cylinder head.

How far down can the wrapping go?
All the way down to the silencer?

I mentioned in a previous thread that a known V8 conversion issue is the design and layout of the exhaust. The Patrol underbody was not designed for V8s.
So layout is key. Just the general proximity between the exhaust and other parts can be close, and isolating the heat further down may just be a good idea.

I bit off the "wrapping" theme, I had "studs" welded onto my branch and fitted the original deflector / heat shield (4.8 GRX). This works very well, did a trip through Bots, Caprivi, down Nam coastline, towing a Jurgens Xplorer in April with outside temps at places up to 40 deg. Had no issues with excessive heat in the engine compartment - at least I think so.

Yeah the deflector plate will definitely work to assist feeding the hot air down and out under the chassis. I don't have the deflector plate as I bought mine with the branches and turbo already fitted.

Alex, I would say it would be the best thing to do. I would be comfortable to wrap the exhaust from start to just before the end. I would then, every 0.5 meter, clamp the tape in place to ensure it stays in place, and even extra clamps near areas that are heat susceptible.

Oh, and one more thing:
One of the causes of fire is dry grass collecting on the pipe, also flammable heated fluid (such as break fluid when hot) dropping on the hot exhaust or manifold.
So to minimise these risks, covering the pipe may be just what is needed.
