Sorry if I am hijacking this thread! I have been told that light bars are illegal in SA (know the roof mounted ones are) so came up with a plan! Got my guy that did my seat covers to make me a cover for my light bar, now the cops can say nothing as it is covered (think it will also give some protection for flying rocks!), there is velkrow at each end so easy to remove when I need it. If anyone would like one he says R100 for the small one (mine is 0.5m) and R200 for the big ones

Ian, unfortunately they are still illegal, even if covered...

The law is quite clear on that point, covers don't make lights legal that are otherwise illegal. Neither does special switches that ensure that they don't come on with the brights.

As for light bars being illegal, well, to my mind this is a huge grey area. The issue that the law has with light bars is that lights are supposed to be arranged symmetrically around the vertical centreline of the vehicle. To my mind, it can be argued that a light mounted exactly on the centre line has just as much on the left as on the right, and thus it IS symmetrical.

The other part of the law that is potentially an issue is that you are only allowed to have six lights (excluding indicators and such) on the front of your car. So do they count the light bar as one light, or do they count each LED as a light... But if the second is the case, most curent production cars are illegal, so you have a clear precedent to defend.

Light bars (or any other lights) on the roof rack are definately illegal, as there is a maximum height lights are allowed to be above the ground. Again, whether or not they are covered is supposed to be irrelevant.

This was kind of a sale thread for a led bar. not really a discussion if its legal or not.

But thanks...
