Bash and skid plates

Post by Peter Connan »

Hello Guys

I have around four transfer case skid plates, four or five front bash plates for the Y60/Y61 non-4.8 models and one front bash plate for a 4.8 still available.

All plates are galvanized. The transfer case skid plates are R700 and the front bash plates are R950 each.

Wat ek Saterdag by RDW gesien het was dat Iron Maiden se bashplate die obstacle geraak het en Chuck sonder een het niks geraak nie!

Kobus a bash plate has to sit slightly lower than the component it intends to protect, especially if the component in question is mounted on rubber mountings, and that is the case here. So yes the bash plate may connect where nothing would have connected if there was no bash plate.

But if there is no bash plate and the obstacle is serious enough to reach the transfer case you could be looking at a fairly hefty repair bill. I was in a landy once when a learner driver lost focus and drove over a tree that had been flattened by an elephant. The handbrake drum cought the tree and bent to such an extent that the hand brake was jammed on solidly. It took us about four hours to get it off so that we could dismantle the handbrake mechanism so that we could drive back to camp. What made the experience even more unhappy was that one of the passengers broke her foot in the accident.

As in all things, there are advantages and disadvantages, and you makes your choices and pays your moneys...

a knock on a bash plate does not break or cost money ,a broken steering arm or hole in tranfer case ruins your trip and gives you LR syndrome :rolling: :rolling: :rolling: :oldtimer:

Jules in my opinion the transfer case skidplate is the more important, for two reasons:
1) The Patrol has a fairly long wheelbase, and thus this area touches more often than the nose.
2) The damage against which the skid plate protects is potentially far more expensive.

Most pictures are at the end of the thread - Just let Peter know which vehicle you have as there are subtle differances.
