'95 SFA Hilux 2.4

Post by iandvl »

Sorry, this is not Patrol related. But posting this on behalf of a friend of mine. He's "upgraded" (I'd actually not use that term) to a D4D Hilux, and his SFA is on the market.

Year: 1995
Motor: 2.4 Petrol (22R)
Mileage: 147,700km
Extras: OME Suspension, Long range tank, Alu-cab canopy, Front Runner drawer system, Sunroof

If anyone is interested, please PM me and I'll put you in touch with the guy directly. The photos are from where the vehicle is currently standing at a dealership, but it is not sold yet.

Seriously, for it's age, it's one of the better ones I've seen...

If I wasn't a Patrol-head, I'd have snapped it up... I love the SFA Hiluxes - in fact, I learnt to 4x4 in one... And I still think Toyota made a mistake in taking them off the market...

Really well kitted bakkie that! My firat overlanding vehicle was very almost a KZTE, always been a fan of them
The sad thing is that the price tag on it will probably be in the range of buying a Patrol........ Toyota just has that price tag whick everyone is willing to pay.

I think one would be able to get quite a nice Patrol with the price he is looking for... :rolling: :rolling:

It is very nice and will go for a very good price.

It does however have two very serious drawbacks

1. It will use more fuel than a 4.8 Patrol (tongue in cheek, but those motors are very thirsty and are therefore HEAVY on Fuel!!)

2. And the real concern, if it gets even a small bump, the insurance will right it off. A 23 year old Hilux does not even have a trade and retail (book) value, and even if the damage from an accident is R20k, it WILL be written off.

Imagine if next year you are on holiday in Kaokoland and in van Zyl's pass it falls over (or some Owambo sideswipes it and writes off the whole right hand side). You now need to bring it to SA on a flaftbed truck and you get a quote for R25k, and the damage is around R40k. The insurance company will just laugh at you and offer you R25k and write it off. What do you do?

Offer them to buy it back for R30k, then pay R25k to bring it back here and another R50K to repair it. Now you have had the vehicle for just one year, you originally paid R125k for it, and a year down the road it is going to cost you another R105k to get it repaired.

I sat with that dilemma with my 17 year old Terrano, that was still in prime condition. The problem was that it had a very low (R45k) market value. I could not afford for it to be written of, but even a small R30k rear-ender by a Taxi would have written it off!! I was forced to flog it and get something of higher value to prevent an interruption of running my safari business.
