Post by Jules »

All of PATROL4X4 members or friends in our area is welcome to join on this trip, after the rains this could be a very snotty trip over " tree wortels" and rocks :blonde: See directions right at end of post

Goeie more almal

Weens die demokratiese neigings van ons land, hoewel ek soms dink dis kommunisties sal die Ongoye Forrest trippie Sondag 14 Junie plaasvind. :blonde:

Hier is die reelings
Richardsbaai vertrekpunt :layrubber:
SHELL GARAGE te Meerensee om 06h30 om teen 06h45 te ry.

Empangeni :layrubber:
CALTEX GARAGE by Kentucky ons sal seker so 07h09 daar wees.

GEEN ROMMEL WORD AGTERGELAAT NIE so vat swart sak saam vir jou rommel

KOSTE IS R10 per persoon om in Forrest in tegaan.

Die wat aangedui het hul kan Dinsdag gaan kyk maar of jul reelings kan tref, die wat nog besluitloos is, besluit maar om te gaan.

Ons sal seker so tussen 15h30 - 16h30 terug wees in Richardsbaai so jul kan wel aanddiens by jul kerke bywoon.

Sien jul dus Sondag 14 Junie anders sien ek jul dalk vroeer die naweek.

ONTHOU VAT MAAR N BYL OF KAP PANGA SAAM VIR MOONTLIKE TAKKE :bravo:

DIRECTIONS
It is advisable to use a guide and a 4X4 vehicle when visiting Ongoye. Please contact the Zululand Birding Route for more information on getting to Ongoye forest. Below are directions to enter from the east, but bear in mind that there are no clear road signs.
At Mtunzini, turn off the N2 freeway and head inland (west). At a T-junction turn right (north) and take the old road north to Empangeni (R102). About 4km north of the Forest Inn, turn left onto a dirt road, just before what was an old Shell Service station. Here you need to zero your tripmeter. Follow this road for 4.5km and turn right onto D1554. Continue on this road to just past the Manzamnyama School on your left, and at 8.9km turn right onto a small track (a small hand painted sign announces Ongoye). The gate into the forest is at 10.2km. Continue along the main track, pay your entrance fee by going down a track to the right at the fork at the top of the hill. Return to the main track and continue north (turn right). Turn left onto an indistinct grassy track - the main track goes over the hill. You are now heading for the forest on your left. Stop before or just inside the main forest, (from here on the road is really bad).
Roads to Ongoye Forest are constantly being upgraded. The eastern entrance is the more popular with birders and takes one into the heart of the forest. Drive on the R102 from Road Island Service Station outside Mtunzini towards Empangeni for 11,6 kms. Turn left into the D525 and follow this road for 4,5 kms before turning right into D1554. Continue on this gravel road for 4,4 kms and just after passing Manzamnyama School (on the left) turn right into the Ongoye forest road. For the next 2 kms difficult sections of the track have been concreted. At the top of the hill there is a track road to the right leading to the Ranger's office where all visitors must report before proceeding with their visit to the forest. The western access is by tarred road on the P240 from Obanjeni (about 6kms from Mtunzini on the R102) and gives visitors easy access to pockets of the forest and the western grasslands.
