Coming over from the dark side...
So after having driven mostly Toyotas...I am moving over to Nissan.
Wife drives the Qasqhai and we couldn't be happier with it...swopped a a Prado V6 for it and we are smiling at the fuel pump at last.
I am looking at the Patrol, specifically a 2001 model. 265 000km on the clock. FSH. 3.0 GL.
They are asking R85k.
Any thoughts on reliability and what I should look out for? Known issues/problems?

Re: Coming over from the dark side...
The Pre 2004 3.0di Nissan Engine was known as the "hand grenade" engine. They blew up (holes in pistons) due to problems with the ECU (probably over-fueling).
The problem was solved in 2004 sometime and the 2005 models onward are considered "safe". I would rather look for a later model 3.0Di or even a 4.2 diesel. If a turbo is professionally fitted to the 4.2d motor, the guys safely get 160 plus kw with around 600 nm torque.
See Micheal's post here on this website regarding the mods he does to get those figures...

Re: Coming over from the dark side...
Thanks for that.
I would prefer the 4.2. The simpler the better.
Looking at the old box shape with a 4.2 as well for R60k.

Re: Coming over from the dark side...
As Malcolm said earlier, I'd rather go 4.2 than older 3 Litre. And the GQ's (the older, box shape you mention) are awesome.

The 4.2 is as simple as it gets.
With the right bits & tune they also make great reliable power.

Re: Coming over from the dark side...
GQ 4.2 diesel ( with or without turbo).... very scarce, but brilliant
GU 4.2 diesel ( with or without turbo).... less scarce, but brillliant
but there is also a GQ 4.2 PETROL .... a lot more common and available, but also thirstier than the diesels
As Malcolm said there 3.0 diesel was a problem child, but...... in my opinion, if you can get it for a good deal, and considering that it already has well over 100 000km on it, then chances are that the motor is still good. If its a good deal price wise, then I would open up the motor and give everything a good going over, maybe replace the pistons and rings (minor cost as nothing is actually broken), and do the EGR blocking off and make sure a Madman is fitted, and I think you could have a winner.
Juice here on the forum has a 2000 3.0 Diesel and his has high milage on and is going like a dream!!!

Re: Coming over from the dark side...
The 4.2 diesel with a turbo is a brilliant machine. Just drove back from Ponta do Ouro, fully loaded, with roofrack on and well packed, and got 14.6 L/100km
I wouldn't mind a 4.8, as that is also a beast of a machine, but I use mine as a daily drive so fuel consumption is a concern....haha
