Wannabe Patrol 4.2 Pickup Owner...

Post by SJC »

Hello everyone,

I am new on this forum, but I am also active on 4x4community.co.za and gunsite.co.za.

My first "real bakkie" I owned was a 2001 Nissan 2L Hardbody, this was about 10 years ago, after I sold this vehicle I got myself a 2007 Hadbody 3L (tdi?) d/cab (not 4x4). After I sold this vehicle, because I wanted a 4x4, I bought a Colt 2.8 d/cab (best deal on my trade in at the time, why I settled on this vehicle). Eventually sold this vehicle. It never gave me any hassles and I regretted selling it.
My current 4x4 which I am (also) busy selling is a suzuki jimny. (very capable little 4x4 this).

Anyway long story short, I have always been a big Nissan fan and I told myself many years ago that I would one day get myself a Nissan Patrol bakkie. (when I can afford one.)
Finally I realised that a Patrol bakkie is now affordable to me.... (not a new one, but used will have to do for now)

So here goes: (excuse me I copy and pasted the next section from my post on 4x4community.co.za)

I am interested in buying a 2007 Patrol 4.2 Bakkie, 163k on the clock. This vehicle is advertised for R189000.

The pros:
lots of extras:

bush bumper
2 x sets LED spots
winch
rock sliders
rear bumper + towbar
cattle rails (galvanized)
canvas canopy
2 spare wheels (although not same as wheels that is on vehicle & one spare is different make tire)
service history by franchise, + some self service
rubberized bin - in good condition.

Cons:
Interior is in bad shape. seats, dash/door panels are dirty and scratched.
Vehicle body got some scratches. No major dents that I could see. Does not appear to have been in an accident.
No aircon. (not the end of the world but worth mentioning.)
One "scratch" on rear left corner of vehicle, underneath tailgate handle but not on tailgate, about 5cm in length, goes right true body panel, it look more like a tear than a scratch if I can explain it like this. Can this be fixed? Sorry I dont have a pic of it. It is thin though about 1mm. Don't want it to start rusting, there is already some sign of rust forming.
The seller says that he does not use the sub diesel tank as the primary tank is big enough and the sub tank does not lock. Is this not a bad thing to do? as mildew can grow in diesel tanks?
The engine bay is also quite dirty. from dust/mud, no visible oil leaks.

Now I must decide if the extras on the vehicle out ways the not so perfect "cosmetic" condition of the vehicle.
Apart from the deep scratch(tear) the exterior does not seem to bad. Some scratches/chips which I can live with. The interior however is not a deal breaker for the seller.
I'm not to worried about the seats as i can fit seat covers. They are just dirty and a little bit worn.
Maybe the interrior can be deep-cleaned or steam cleaned? Not sure.

This vehicle is the guy from the dealership's personal vehicle.
His daily drive and he use the bakkie on his farm, which probably explains why it is so dirty.

These bakkies are workhorses and this one looks like it was used as one, but as I understand these patrols are die-hards that will give many hundreds of kilometers.

So is this a good deal(price) or not? What else do I need to look out for?

Good Day.

As much as i would like to have another pickup owner on this forum, i must point out a few issues i see with this particular deal.

- The 2007 models only came out with vinyl seats. So someone has reupholstered this vehicle at some stage of its life.

- This model , although full of extras, is still the standard Patrol, NOT the safari Edition, as i see it has a single skin load-body, unlike the double skin of the Safari edition ,... This makes the tub far more vulnerable to dings and dents.

- Only the very first imported batch of pickups (2006/7) came without AC as standard,.... i owned one before, it wasnt great. To retro-fit AC is a massive expense, and alot more expensive than one anticipates.

As far as the diesel tank issue,.. i wouldnt worry about this. Although diesel CAN go "off",.. its oil based, so the tank is somewhat "lined". At worst you would end up with a clogged diesel filter and at the very worst, a clogged banjo filter. Both easily remedied.

Dust and Dirt is not an issue in my opinion, but it does indicate the vehicle was used as a farm vehicle, so it would have been worked slightly harder than others.

Then finally.

As much as i would like the re-sale price to stay high,.. the R189k asking price is just too high in my opinion for a patrol pickup with 165k on the clock, if i look at an average selling/ asking price over the last 2-3 years. particulalry when considering the condition, model type, and lack of items like AC, original Patrol Rims, etc, which are very saught after.

Regards
Russ.

Thanks for the info. Food for thought.

Russ when you say " Only the very first imported batch of pickups (2006/7) came without AC as standard,.... i owned one before, it wasnt great"
When you say they were not great, where they prone to giving problems? Or are you refering to the lack of AC?

I like the big tanks on the 2007 models.( 175L?) What size tanks did the later models come out with 95L?

Well if anyone know of a good buy, please let me know... I really like all the extras on this Patrol, it would probably cost a lot to fit all this myself. The vehicle does however looks a bit neglected....

Fanus,
I own two of the early non turbo pickups . One with aircon and one without.
Both are used as logistical support vehicles for the fieldwork I do. They work hard towing site caravans and loading supplies and get used recovering stuck vehicles.

I like the non turbo version because it is known to last well beyond 500k km before major maintenance. (assuming correct service intervals were kept)

As long as the drivetrain is sound , the "window dressing" can be upgraded easily.

The asking price is too high , but compare it to similar priced Cruisers and you will see that it is still the best value for money.

Chris.
