Grant Francis on this forum has a 4.2 Patrol with an aftermarket turbo. It has over 400k km on it, and no serious trouble ever. But it was fitted and has always been operated by somebody who understands the issue, and the kit itself was developed by a reputable big-budget concern, and it is religiously and scrupulously maintained.

So yes, it is possible.

But there is no financially viable test that can be performed to determine whether problems are lurking. One might be able to find the gremlins by stripping the engine down and having the pistons and cylinder head radiographically examined, but I doubt it would show all the issues and it's certainly not worth it financially.

Having said all that, these engines are not nearly as expensive to re-build as the more recent common-rail engines, and if the car can be had for a bargain, it might still be an option...

SJC wrote:I am interested in buying a 2007 Patrol 4.2 Bakkie, 163k on the clock. This vehicle is advertised for R189000.

The pros:
lots of extras:

bush bumper
2 x sets LED spots
winch
rock sliders
rear bumper + towbar
cattle rails (galvanized)
canvas canopy
2 spare wheels (although not same as wheels that is on vehicle & one spare is different make tire)
service history by franchise, + some self service
rubberized bin - in good condition.

Cons:
Interior is in bad shape. seats, dash/door panels are dirty and scratched.
Vehicle body got some scratches. No major dents that I could see. Does not appear to have been in an accident.
No aircon. (not the end of the world but worth mentioning.)
One "scratch" on rear left corner of vehicle, underneath tailgate handle but not on tailgate, about 5cm in length, goes right true body panel, it look more like a tear than a scratch if I can explain it like this. Can this be fixed? Sorry I dont have a pic of it. It is thin though about 1mm. Don't want it to start rusting, there is already some sign of rust forming.
The seller says that he does not use the sub diesel tank as the primary tank is big enough and the sub tank does not lock. Is this not a bad thing to do? as mildew can grow in diesel tanks?
The engine bay is also quite dirty. from dust/mud, no visible oil leaks.

Now I must decide if the extras on the vehicle out ways the not so perfect "cosmetic" condition of the vehicle.
Apart from the deep scratch(tear) the exterior does not seem to bad. Some scratches/chips which I can live with. The interior however is not a deal breaker for the seller.
I'm not to worried about the seats as i can fit seat covers. They are just dirty and a little bit worn.
Maybe the interrior can be deep-cleaned or steam cleaned? Not sure.

This vehicle is the guy from the dealership's personal vehicle.
His daily drive and he use the bakkie on his farm, which probably explains why it is so dirty.

These bakkies are workhorses and this one looks like it was used as one, but as I understand these patrols are die-hards that will give many hundreds of kilometers.

So is this a good deal(price) or not? What else do I need to look out for?
I made a very interresting discovery about this vehicle:

http://mosselbay.olx.co.za/nisan-patrol ... -597706151

http://car.trovit.co.za/index.php/cod.f ... pe.1/pop.1

I dont really know what to make of this. I think the vehicle was bought in mosselbay for R175k and at some stage they were selling it(or trying to), for R160k? (This is same dealership that is now trying to sell it for R189k.)
This is bizarre... maybe I should offer them R140k.

The R160k advert seems to be a new add.

If this Patrol is selling for R160k (will confirm tomorrow)....is it worth going for it?

Seats have been recovered as far as i can tell by the pics.

With anything over 150k on the clock, being a 2007 model, even if it was bog-standard, insurance will not offer you more than R165K cover or there abouts. You will have to argue the value with them to give you more cover particularly when adding extras and the like.

Not sure if I'm blind, but I can't see the kilos.

Also I am personally not keen on the auto fitted to the 4.5. Too few gears for the car's weight, and it really seems to sap performance.

Other than that it looks fine.
