Re: Fuel consumption...
Hallo almal...
Dankie.
Totale afstand 130.5km.
Brandstof verbruik 50.3l.
Dis so 2.58km/l

Re: Fuel consumption...

Re: Fuel consumption...
Many people feel 95 is for Turbo motors. As a matter of interest why was 95 not available in Jhb before, yet was at the coast?Herrie wrote:Die laaste twee keer wat ek die Patol vol gemaak het by Total (net 93 by die garage en het gewoonlik op 95 gebly) het my brandstof verbruik heelwat verander!

Re: Fuel consumption...
The octane rating is a measure of how resistant petrol is to pre-ignition.
The octane rating that an engine needs to run is a function of the maximum pressure and temperature the combustion mixture achieves when the pistons reach Top Dead Centre. This is dependent on the engine's compression ratio, the temperature in the combustion chamber, the temperature of the air going into the cylinder and the atmospheric air pressure.
This explains why you generally need a higher octane rating at the coast than at the highveld.
Engine designers keep using higher compression ratios, in a continuous search for better engine efficiency and as a result of materials that can better handle higher continuous temperatures, and this is why the octane ratings of the available fuels have to keep increasing every few years.

Peter
How will this affect older engines in years to come?
If lower octane is not that freely avaialble anymore and we get forced to put higher octane in the engines that may not have been designed to take it.
How far can this upward rise in octane go?

Re: Fuel consumption...
I still remember the days before unleaded... it was 98 at the coast...
Then you had "union spirit" a Mobil product that was sort of like 102 or 108 octane... before the "nitro" days...

Re: Fuel consumption...
Alex, there is no detriment to older engines running higher octane fuels than they need, only the other way around. So don't stress. The 4.2 Petrol engine in my car can (according to the manual) run right down to 88 octane.
The only disadvantage of higher octane fuels, is that they are more expensive.
The guys who race their cars mostly try and get their hands on AVGAS, which is (I think) also around 102-108 Octane, but some say it is a "dry"fuel, so they tend to add some lubricant to it.
Very modern engines can also sort-of run lower octanes than is ideal, because they have "knock sensors" which detect when pre-ignition occurs, and then the ICU retards the ignition timing, but this is not ideal. Under these conditions, the engine will produce substantially less power, but if this system were not present, substantial engine damage could result from using too low an octane rating.
