Y61 Pre-Facelift GRX Centre Caps

Post by iandvl »

Folkses,

I've been mucking around with 3D printing recently. And my first "working" project is done.

In short: if you need rear centre caps for pre-face lift GRX rims, I can print you a set. I've not worked out costing yet, but it will be about R400 per set of two - basically just time and material, as well as a contribution for the design (the design is not mine).

Set consists of three parts and stainless M8 hex bolts and ny-lock nuts. There is a bracket which fits behind the flanges in the rim. A larger piece which aligns with the spokes of the rim, and the plate you see from the front.

The pictures are of a prototype I printed to see if the thing actually worked. As such, print quality is "draft" and the material is PLA. This is not suitable for the "real-world" application.

Production models will be printed with ABS, and will also have an "acetone vapour bath" to get rid of the printing marks (the "striations" you can see in the photos).

If anyone needs centre caps, please let me know.

I'm also well under way getting a similar steel rim centre cap sorted, as well as similar front wheel centre caps.

I'd also like to see whether I can get my hinds on a post-face-list GRX rim, as then I can make a plan for them as well.

Oom Mac - I've got that logo in 3d model already. Busy modifying the design to include a Datsun logo as well.

I'll print a test batch to see if they work.

Looks great Ian.

When you ready for the steelies I have them on both vehicles if you want measurements or even borrow a sample.

Font I have manual locking hubs on the 1 vehicle and auto on the other. Not sure if the same size.

Back I have the standard on the 4.5 and the big bearing carriers on the bakkie.

What about a badge to replace the one on the front grill? Either "Datsun" or "Patrol". Anything other than "Nissan".

David,

I sort of agree with you there. My own design (based on the original one) for a Datsun version is complete now, and I'm currently busy working on one which just says "Patrol". Since I'd like it to have the proper look of the "Patrol" logo, this is taking a bit of time. I will post photos one day when I'm done and I get around to printing them. :)

How difficult would it be to "print" these caps?
(My front right side one is missing)

Fanus,

They should be relatively easy. Two issues though:

1: I won't be able to replicate the finish - ie: the pattern on the part.
2: I won't be able to match colour. Unfortunately, one is relatively limited in terms of the colour of filament one can get. The only way one would be able to get a colour match is to print in white and paint the part. Fortunately, a bunch of filament types are "paint-friendly".

Let me know.

Hi Ian

Not pushuing - just asking: Are you still doing 3D printing? I would LOVE a set of then DATSUN ones for LOBO as he carries the real McCoy NISSAN PATROL STEEL RIMS .. albeit with Nissan I D on them, And LOBO is a DATSUN, mos :oldtimer: :oldtimer:
