The 300 has more non-streetnav functionality than the nüvi 500 (or any other nüvi for that matter), but which of these functions are regularly used in the 4x4 application? To me the bottom line is that Garmin has cleverly positioned the street nav and trail nav machines apart so that you will have to buy one of each if you want the ultimate of everything. If you can have only one, then one has to decide where you will get most bang for the buck most of the time and live with the limitations that the unit has.
