Well...

I managed to track down a professional adventurer!

He does expeditions across the country/continent & tests a wide range of gear too.

I shot him a mail & this was his response:

"In terms of the tracking / emergency comms system, the DeLorme inreach solution is the way to go... http://www.delorme.co.za/

The local guys rip you off a little, so rather try get the actual contract side of things direct from the US http://www.inreachdelorme.com/ and you'd look at the Recreation Plan to start with.
