Just a thought, if you use a iphone / ipad with 3G and travel outside of South Africa, you will need to activate roaming to use the maps and this will be costly.

The 3g version has an independent gps receiver, and it does not require a cell phone signal to figure out where it is. (The cell phone signal does help it a little, however, to find its location a bit faster when starting up the navigation app - the cellphone towers provide a rough idea of where the ipad is, and that helps the gps software to find the required sattelites a little faster.)

If you buy tracks4africa, the data set is downloaded once to your iPad (it is a bulky 650 mb once-off download), and it will there-after not eat data while navigating - so it is not necessary to have roaming on to use navigation in a foreign country. Some of the additional functions in the software, such as logging etc, requires data connection, but that is not a critical requirement for the navigation and mapping part to function.

There are also other navigation software for the iPad that works in a similar manner, eg Navigon and TomTom - both have good data that is installed when you buy the software (granted, not as good in remote areas and on 4x4 routes than T4A, but much better in cities and towns), and data is only used during use of the app for minor non-critical functions - so no problem if data is not available.

(Note that this is not true for the Apple build in maps app - the built in application downloads map data as needed, and this thus requires a data connection when you enter a new region that is not cached on the iPad.)
