Which VHF Radio

Post by offroadbiker »

I can get the following two radio's which is the best option?

Kirisun PT8100 for R1500 (nicer radio?) displays the names of the channels - or a
HYT TM600 for R1200 - HYT just show the number and it is brand new.

Kirisun have local distribution & a good reputation. I personally have one of their portables, and the Nissan club have two further Kirisun portables.

I'm afraid I don't know the HYT brand at all

I just cant win

On the Community website they also talk good about the Kirsten, but the "radio dealer" in my area says they only had trouble with them

Also can not give me an arial for one, but has the HYT for me at R950 and arial for R90, so is he only trying to make a sale here??????? ( it is cheaper including the arial than what I could get WWW )

Taking into consideration should i need assistance he will most probably be the one I have to go to..............

Hmmm... that HYT radio only has provision for 8 channels. ORRA currently has three frequencies, and with various permutations of tone/no tone you won't be able to program them all into the HYT.

1. ORRA 1 – regular member communication
2. ORRA 2 – regular member communication
3. ORRA 3 – regular member communication
4. ORRA 4 – regular member communication
5. ORRA 5 – emergency, logistical & remote
6. ORRA 6 – emergency, logistical & remote
7. ORRA 7 – compatibility with old ORRA 1
8. ORRA 8 – compatibility with old ORRA 2
9. ORRA 9 – compatibility with old ORRA 3

You'll have to skip some of these frequencies (probabbly ORRA 7-9) if you chose the HYT, which means you won't be able to chat to folks who have not had their radios re-tuned yet (quite a lot of them still out there, believe it or not!).

The advantage of not worrying about those "old" frequencies is that your antenna can be better tuned to your radio (lowering the standing wave ratio results in more efficient transmission).

I have both the HYT handheld and radio built into the Troll. Not very clued up but they work well. Just need to read the manuals. Had no problems in the last 18 months.

Chisto
Wat is stand van sake met radio lisensies? Is lisensie nou weer bekombaar en is dit van toepassing op hierdie radios?

Yep ORRA have received a batch of VHF licenses (applicable to these radios).

The HF licenses have always been available...
