O K -- Finally got the reply: One can NOT install T4A mapset on TomTom Gps units. It seems T4A did approach them but the declined to make their platform available to accommodate T4A.

So - there you have it - if you MUST T4A - then TomTom is out ...

I managed to upload the latest Srtreetmaps & Topo Rec mapsets to my Nuvi ... full of confidencce I tried it over the weekend - I at times felt like just smashing the thing - It tells me to turn lefte - so i turn, within 20 meters it "recalculating" en make a u turn

It cannot even find the City Lodge next to Monte Casino - and worts, my NOKIA 6110 Navigator of 5year vintage finds it straight away AND guides me right into their parking area.

Garmin & its maps are a big disappointment to me - I cannot in any way ever advise anybody to buyt it [maybe if the bring the price down to R500 or less and give the maps for free [at that price one would expect something so frustrating]
At least - The gps machine itself is good and solid - but the software and operation .. it fails every test of reason.
WHY must one press "back" a million times when you chage the setting from "fastest route" to "shortest route" [because it wants to take me to Gaberone from Pta East through Martinsdrift Border post when "fastest" was selected ... so you have to 'menu' 'tools' ' settings' 'navigation' "shorter distance" before the change is made [that is 5 presses] then you need te "bacK press again 4 times AND STILL THE Idiot thing cannot go the map view by common sense - you still have to press "view map" ... else it just glares "Where to" // View Map" [and all this while I am in peak traffic at 120 on a highway ...]
Can the ********* whoever programs these things not get informed and supply us with a unit for AFRICA [where the gimmickry is excluded and the functionality is enhanced??
If I get buyer for the NUVI tomorrow - it is GONE... maps & all.

Oom Mac there is something wrong with your unit. I know at least three people who have Nuvi 500's and do not experience these types of issues.

Please check what avoidances are switched on, and see is switching them off improves the situation. Then check which maps you have active (tools, settings, 2nd page, map,map info (onder aan)) Only one map should be ticked, otherwise it may do funny things.

If the above doesn't help, I would recommend sending it to Avnic trading to get the software reloaded.

O K - Bring any 5 Garmin Nuvi 500's with the same mapsets & settings - and we drive the route I drove - and see if anybody gets a better reading or "guidence"

Verstaan jy hoekom is ek "not a happy chappy"?

Kyk bikki - In Zeerust is 'n B&B: Grey Lourie .. kyk of jou Gramin hom ophet?

Dit smaak my daar is iewers n ernstige virus in jou sisteem - of half verdrinkte tor!!!!

Sterkte

I have only used my sister's Nuvi 200 wide to play and experiment with. For my last birthday, I was given a Montana 600. So far I've only been playing with it to try and get to learn how to use it properly, but so far it seems to have all the necessary stuff for an overland trip, including a route planner and track manager, it's waterproof and has a fair battery life that can be supplemented with AA batteries. I have loaded tracks 4 africa as well as Sub Saharan Street Maps - it seems as if it will do all the necessary however I will only be able to put it to the test later on in the year.

The Montana 600 is currently my favourite GPS, and I have the 276C, Nuvi 500 and Nuvi 1410. The Montana is an excellent product and still costs about 40% less than the 276C used to when it was still current. The Nuvi500 is an excellent buy at this point in time too, being offered at about 50% discount to its original price. The Montana, 276C and Nuvi 500 are all water-proof products as well.
