Rear bumper 2 spare wheels + 2 jerry cans
Does anyone make a rear replacement bumper that has 2 swing out spare wheels together with 2 jerry can holders? I am trying to do away with my roof rack on long trips. I have seen plenty of bumpers with 2 spare wheels or one spare wheel and 2 or 3 jerry cans, but never seen 2 of each on the same bumper. There may be a good engineering reason for it but I am not an engineer. Why not bolt one jerry can holder onto each spare wheel?

I don't think it cant be done....but imho i think its to much weight ....2 spare wheels are for the days before tpms 12v compressors and tubeless tires. ...2 Jerry's Full of feul is about 55kg ...give or take ..a roofrack moves firewood ....gasbottles awnings ect we can have a look but 2 spare wheels at 35kg each plus 2 Jerry's 55kg and arms are going to be a lot of weight on your rear side .
Since i got a tpms i have never lost a tire ever ...get i nail in it ....fix it on the van ....

Thanks Tinus you are probably right. I have been on trips where a vehicle has needed 2 new tyres. Its not just punctures we have to think about. I used to just carry the tyre without the rim - its lighter. But then I got lazy to change tyres on the trip and got another rim. If I got rid of the rim to lighten the load? I wonder what a rim weighs?

I would strongly advise against this. Too much weight too far back.
In fact, I am even sceptical about two spare wheels on the rear bumper. I realize that many people have done it without issues, but the rear spring mounts are one of the only known weak areas on the Patrol, and such an installation puts a lot of stress on them due to the leverage they have.

Thinus, I have been thinking about this point (made by PC) a lot over the past few days. This after I lost a tyre last month (no TPMS installed -yet-). The question I have is: If it is not ever possible (or how likely) it is to damage a tyre so instantly, such that the TPMS did not give you enough of a heads-up to stop and inspect?
If what you say is true, can one not then extend the argument that ons does not need any spare on a long trip anymore?
I.e., if you don't need 2 spares, then why need 1? You always stop when pressure drops quickly, and patch up - off you go again.
I lost a HT tyre at Krokodilberg in Feb. Long story. Was experimenting with different tyres. The bottom line was that the sidewall got a whole the size of a R5 coin. Sure you can blame me and blame my co-driver (left rear wheel). But mistakes happen. The tyre was damaged beyond what a patch can fix and it happened instantly. It may have been less likely with an MT, but all you need is a rock sharp enough. TPMS would have been no help here.

A TPMS is probably of more help on the road to prevent severe damage to a tyre. When traversing difficult rocky terrain with sharp rock it is advisable to carry two spares. In some case certain people carry three spares as it has happened that two tyres have been damaged beyond repair on such terrain, but then again it is extreme. I don't believe one needs more than one spare under ordinary offroad conditions. However, if you are going to venture into remote areas two spares may be well worth the trouble. The problem remains-where to carry those spares. Maybe one on the back and one on the roofrack is the answer. Just remember the impact on stability if you carry it on the roofrack.

I was wondering about the possibility of carrying a spare tyre or two (no rim) on the bonnet = quite far forward. Not sure it will work and will stuff up the paintwork unless a protective layer is applied first. You could also strap one to the bulbar but that might impede airflow.

I have also been through the motions with this. But it is a lot of weight and takes up a lot of space no matter where you put it. I want a single spare carrying rear bumper just to get the spare wheels weight of the door hinge. 33" tyre on steel rim is heavy.
Tyre pressures is your one worst enemy on any tyre. Low pressure increase heat. To much heat brakes down the tyre composite. So I agree with Tinus. TPMS and good tyres and you should be fine. Johan Bardehorst drives through africa with 3 bakkies. 45000 od k's with no punctures because he uses a 3 ply side wall tire. Bf g muds. Thats 12 tyres to take into account. When he ran other brands he said he had to repair punctures up to 5 times a week.
This goes for jerry cans also. Maybe I just haven't travelled far enough. I have not been in a situation yet where I wished I had an extra jerry can of feul. I keep my sub tank for emergencies. Then I just fill up every time I stop for SWAMBO and the girls. They fill up faster than the Troll empties . Feul availbilty is good.
I don't have a TPMS or bfg muds I run on Nankan Mudstars. 19 000km's thus far just returned from a almost 6000km trip via Namibia with no punctures. But I am critical on tyre pressures. They only go below 2bar when I rock crawl or deep sand driving. And when I'm done I inflate before I hit the road. The TPMS is on my list. Because it will help me to see whats going on while driving.
