I don't know the Nissan 4.2 but the Toyota 4.2 donkey diesel uses about 18l/100km. Quite honestly, on that basis I would rather have a 4.8.

18? that is very thirsty for a diesel... :surprised:
4.2 patrol gets about 7-9km/l. (11-14 l/100km)

Clem my 4.2 td bakkie works very hard iam working in schoemanskloof at the moment. I stay in Nelspruit and travel about 250 km per day between guest house mashado dorp and white river so days double that . As you know the bakkie has a tank that takes 180 l .
Most days n have 12 workers and a 2 ton trailer behind me .
We are driving up and down some serious mountain terrain and I ave 1400 km on that .
I stil need to ad 8% to that becouse of my odo under reading becouse of the 33 tekkies .
That gives a ave of 8.4 km per liter
The motor has got about 165000 km on after i watched Micheal rebuild it.So far i have broken a set of fanbelts .
We change oil dello 400 every 5000 km and oil and filters every 10000
The pulling power on the 4.2 is just out of this world
A person learns to keep it happy by working the gears and keeping the reffs between 2000 and 3000rpm if I go to 4 and put my foot down my boost climb to 1.1bar and egts are about 550 havent had a hill that makes that rig go below 80km per hour.....
I love my 4.8 dont get mw wrong but it will never keep up when working that hard . And my feul bill will be 50l per 100 km ..
The 4.2 diesel properly set up makes 425nm and 105kw on the rear wheels that is close to 650nm on the flywheel....
Even IanT is inpressed with his new koolstoof ....and he is used to a D4 with big power.
A proper set up old school oil burner is the way forward if you wanna work it hard
