Patrol Y61 to be discontinued

Post by Johann 1984 »

Hi Guys,

Sad to say that Nissan Australia has anounced the end of the Y61 Patrol. Both Ute and wagon. Just like the Defender. They listed a stack of reasons ranging from argaic design and tech to high costs of developing new diesel engine that complies with Euro Emission Standards.

I am not sure how this will affect SA and when. In Aus they are going to sell stocks without further production.

Anybody got more details? I am quite sad about this. This will mark the end of the most handsome 4x4 with the most indestructable drivetrain, in my view. I really haven't taken to the Y62. The price is crazy, it's super electronic and it has no live axle or diesel option.

Oh well... at least I have one.

The real question is "What does it mean for parts availability in the future?" given the relatively unique aspect of many of the parts for this vehicle and the existing relatively low level of availability in South Africa.

I read about this on the internet. Many Aussies are fuming at the mouth mad about this. Apparently in the Outback petrol is not readily available, so some hardcore Patrol owners are talking about having to switch to Cruisers eventually. The last I read is that SA will not make the switch, yet...
Let's hope Nissan SA takes as long as they have taken with the new Navara!

My understanding is that the discontinuation of the Patrol is linked to the Australian Market.
Most likely due to more stringent emission legislation which can no longer be met by the engine options which are used for the Nissan Patrol.

The question is: as to how long Nissan SA will continue importing the Patrol or more importantly how long Nissan (japan ? ) will continue with the manufacture of this vehicle.
Obviously... lower production volume means higher production cost; .. means higher likelihood of Nissan deciding discontinue with this model. The fact that Nissan SA only sales 1-3 Vehicles a month does not help the cause.

As to the spares availability:
The standard in the automotive industry is to have spares available for 10 years after end of productions.
