2016 Patrol ZD30CRD or TD42

Good Afternoon everybody!

I have been through most of the topics regarding new ZD30CRD already as silent member/reader but finally registered as I have some questions myself :woo:

Currently I call a Land Cruiser 100 VX 4.2TD my own but will switch to a new Patrol quite soon. The thing is that I am going to move to a far eastern country in August and until recently 70 series Land Cruisers and Nissan Patrol have been on my shortlist. To cut a long story short I have to make desicions now what Patrol model to take. :eureka:

I have the chance to order from Nissan Japan ex-factory through Nissan-Aid - Patrol Models
Following 2016 models are available:
Patrol ZD30CRD STD
Patrol ZD30CRD GL
Patrol ZD30CRD GRX
Patrol TB48 GRX

but I could also get the Patrol with the "old" TD42 (non-turbo) in all the mentioned grades.

Last week I could test drive a Y61ZD30CRD and I was surprised about the "power" - as I have heard a lot of complaints before. On the other hand I also had the Mercedes G 300 Professional (also a TD 3.0) for a drive - which is powerwise in a different league. Anyway - I had a Land Cruiser 76 with the donkey 4.2 engine before - so I am used to that kind of travelling.

I was just wondering how the TD42 (non-turbo) behaves compared to the ZD30CRD or maybe even compared to the 1HZ from Toyota. Comparable to a Land Cruiser HZJ105?

Would you prefer the TD42 over the ZD30CRD if you could choose a 2016 model?

I appreciate the feedback!!! Of course I will keep you up to date.

Regards,
Arnold

Firstly ....Welcome bud !!

now for the important bits and bobs.

It all depends on what YOU want from the vehicle. If fuel costs are not an issue, then the petrol 4.8 Patrol is the king. It tows like a dream and is the king of the dunes.

On the diesel front, this is a little more tricky. Fuel economy of the 3.0 diesel is the king for a monster of a vehicle. Reliability on these motors, I believe, is sorted since post 2004 3.0L diesels. However I would with out a shadow of a doubt and hesitation fit an EGT gauge or Madman monitoring system in there before doing ANY driving. Personally I believe that all manufacturers should fit such a gauge to these types of off road vehicles due to the fact that they are designed for function and not performance, but that's a whole new debate....

I like the philosophy of "you cant beat cubic inches " and 6 cylinders of grunting diesel has a certain something that every 6 cylinder diesel owner loves. Yeah the non turbo 4.2 diesel is a donkey...irrespective of whether its a Toyota or a Nissan. These specific vehicles were with one specific purpose in mind.... reliability, and easy repair in isolated places. Speaking for the Patrol now, that's exactly what the TD42 is, but then you have a donkey without the turbo. With a turbo, its a different kind of beast. and much like the 3.0 ZD30 motor, a TD42 motor with aftermarket turbo, a little care needs to be taken by means of EGT or Madman. There is a TD42 that has a factory fitted turbo and intercooler as far as I know, but I don't know too much about this set up.

Diesel is great and I'm a confirmed diesel-o-holic, and love driving my Iron Maiden. So in short, if fuel usage is an issue, go 3.0 diesel. If fuel is no problem then go 4.8 petrol. It's all about what you want to use the vehicle for. The diesel is also king of the rocky terrain....

Nice to get a warm welcome here!!!

@offroadbiker - 20-22 May I will be on my way to Abenteuer Allrad in Bad Kissingen, Germany. Thanks a lot for the invite!!!!

Alrighty - The Patrol will be used as my daily drive, weekender and overlander. I do favour the ZD30CRD at the moment, althought the diesel quality might be worse than 500ppm. Yes, I have read a lot of topics regarding EGT sensors, 3" exhausts, Madman tool, NADS (200-2004 di models) etc. etc.
Later on I will do some research on how to fit the madman by myself - or at least an EGT gauge after the turbo/exhaust.

Will try to test drive the TB48 - I saw there are some for sale in PTA at the moment.

regards,
Arnold

Apparently the 3.0 ZD motor can handle the 500ppm diesel pretty damn well.... not many motors can !!

yup... i have heard that the zd30 takes 500ppm diesel.

I wouldnt screw up the manifold - and take the easier to install post turbo - dump pipe - solution.

If I were in position to pick "any of" on your list, emotionally I would choose the CRD 30.
For "fun" I would have the 4,8
For common sense for forever and a day .. the 4,2 would be it
For daily and traipsing around earth ?? The CRD 30 would again be it.

Oh .. mkost welcome here with us.
