I have updated the sheet with some new inputs.
Buying a 4.8 for R200k, added insurance per annum, and residual value of vehicle after 5yrs, and what my maint costs are.

The difference between the actual cost of a Rok vs a Trol 4,8 in insignificant (only 29% more) . Add to that the extra benefits of owning a Trol ... I would not consider the 2LCoke/Milk/whatever vessel in place my 'ol faithful'

You are right of course but I did and I can't say I'm sorry...though I did get it new at practically a low mileage used price. Only car I have ever bought new. I'm really happy with it.

I think we all would like to drive new patrols but it just doesn't fit in the buget :rolling: my first 4.8 I paid 400k for drove it for 8 years and bought a 4.8 with more bells and whistles. ..my patrol is my holiday car and toy so it doesn't make sense to me to replace new shocks , bumpers ect with aftermaket stuff .but if I could buy a new one I will

Have had a look at the spreadsheet and think the Patrol maintenance costs are overstated (if I read it correctly).

I have a 2010 4.8 GRX that has not yet got 30 000km on the clock, I use it stricly as a leisure vehicle and have not spent a cent on service type maintenance yet as all service costs were covered by Nissan maintenance plan to date. I have spent a fair bit on modding the vehicle but only other costs have been running costs i.e fuel and for tyre rotation and balancing which is minimal. Given the maintenance plan is now over I aniticpate fairly inexpensive servicing costs (vs my diesel Discovery etc) going forward.

Regards,

Peter

I agree on the low maintenance cost. Assuming nothg goes wrong..

I adjusted the sheet further - if you take the km travelled in the Trol to same as the Rok (30k km/year) then the cost per km of teh Trol is only 7% higher in reality than the Rok - where the Rok loses out is teh high purchase price and the higher depreciation rate therefore. Here we are comparing a used car with a new one. Of course if you buy a second hand Rok then that would make a big difference but who wants to wear a second hand dress :naughty:

Thanks Chris.

The reality is that the Trol will travel less than the Rok currently does, because we will now start using SWAMBO's Tiguan TDi as the weekend runabout.

My aim is to get to a realistic comparison between the two and clearly understand the running costs; it seems that this can turn into a piece of string with no end as we combine more factors to the equation!!

Also bear in mind that there is a certain amount of emotion involved as well. If you, for instance, like the Patrol better than the Amarok (or vice versa), the calculations will start to have less significance and you'll end up getting the one you want.

Emotion trumps logic in decision making 95% of the time

You must also remember the two is not in the same class.... :naughty:
The rok compares to the hilux navara isuzu ect
the patrol to cruiser d4 ect
Just taking the weight of the cars and the size of geartrain into conserasion ....I agree with stefan you must buy a 4x4 with your hart not with a spreadsheet .we all know the 4.8 is a yster and you are going to put feul .....but it will last and bring you back where ever you go :mytwocents:
