Re: Patrol Pickup 4.2D Tyres......advice?!
I am still wondering about the 255/85 vs 285/75.... both is 33". Would the 255/85 not be better suited for the standard patrol rims? Does anyone here have 255/85's on their patrols? Or is it better to opt for the wider tyre?Russ Kellermann wrote:Original Nissan Patrol pickup rims are: 16" 6.5j
I personally would opt for 3 ply side walls at at this hight it offers less roll when cornering and when deflated. Not to mention incredible resilience when the road gets tuff,...
How would the tyre width affect the vehicle roll? Would wider be better?

Not that I've enquired, but the 285/75 seems to be a more common (easier to get hold of) size.

Re: Patrol Pickup 4.2D Tyres......advice?!
SJC , the problem with the 255's is this:
1: Very scares so you need to be buying 6 tyres straight away, as you may not be able to source a spare in a long time, no tyre supplier brining these in will guarantee you this.
2: With an 85 sidewall profile there is considerable sidwall flex when cornering. This can even be felt on the 235's. For this reason i would Definitiely opt for the BFG KM2 as it has a 3 ply wall and doesnt bag as much as the maxxis if im not mistaken,
BUT
For both of these reasons , if you intend to truly use your patrol in tough conditions, throughout South Africa , i would def go for the following options.
235x85x16 (standard Patrol Pickup size)
265x75x16
285x75x16
All 3 sizes are very easily sourced , are the most popular, and simply work.

Re: Patrol Pickup 4.2D Tyres......advice?!
Thanks for all the advise. One of the reasons im considering the 255/85's is because the patrol im buying got, according to seller, 6.5j rims. Which im worried might be to narrow for 285's ?
I'm not sure if 6.5 is a standard patrol rim? According to the seller it is the original rims...?

Re: Patrol Pickup 4.2D Tyres......advice?!
6.5j is original Patrol steel rim size. Like i said in my earlier post, i've run 285's on these for years and never had any issues, and i often deflate to 0.8Bar.

Re: Patrol Pickup 4.2D Tyres......advice?!
ok thanks. I see you did mention your rim size in an earlier post. I was not paying attention.
Does the bigger diameter not effect the gearing in a negative way with regards to power.? I see the land cruiser guys recon that they loose too much power with this size.
I have also read that the cruiser 4.2 is more of a donkey than the patrol 4.2, is this true?
Ps you got a good looking bakkie. What bumper do you have there?

That bumper is to high on top if you have a turbo and intercooler because the air will not get to the intercooler hole - Ricster had to change his hole cover because of this bumper issue!
