AT or MT or lift first

Post by Grootseun »

Ok so ive been talking to a few guys last week about tyres and its about time to fit some new ones to the troll but i have a question or two

Ive played extensively on BF MT's in the past and love the tyre but now swambo drives the trol about 50km a day to work and back and we off road when we have time so the question stands

AT or MT ( of course we all know nothing beats the look of a set of MT's on a troll )
Also size - can get a very good deal on a slightly used set of 285's BF AT's and i know 285s fit on a stock troll but im planning to lift the troll 50mm or so , is the 285's not going to look to small then ?

Should i not rather just hold back on the tyres for a bit and sort the suspension lift first and then fit tyres that fill up the wells nicelly wihtout rubbing

Grootseun,

AT's or MT's is a personnel choice. I have never run one of my Maxxis to the end of it's life. I destroy them before that. I would also never go bigger than the 285/75/16's. Firstly your crawl speed in low range has increased more than I would like, and secondly the fuel consumption has dropped by a round 1,5 lt per 100km.

Grootseun, check the pictures I posted here :http://www.patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.ph ... 4b119a7b45 It is however on a 17" rim so you should have more sidewall rubber but with the same circumference .
Also think 285 is just the right size and as said AT or MT is your choice they both have their pro's and con's

I can say that 99% of the people are very happy with 33 on the GU. I will not go bigger on a trol that is in day to day use!!!

Driko especcially on the 3l TDI I would not go larger than 33". I say this because you need to keep the turbo boost up when crawling up steep hills, and this means that you already have a higher crawl speed than the petrols.

WRT muddies or AT's, I am under the impression that the KM2's also have much better traction on tar and especially wet tar than BF A/T's. their only drawback when compared to BF A/T's are thus a bit of road noise at speed, and shorter life.

I would almost recommend a lift first, but if the tires need replacement, then that is the obvious answer.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.
