Patrol 4.5 Dropping one cylinder

Post by Karanja3 »

Morning gents

The above mentioned vehicle has been dropping one cylinder for more than a year. Last year members gave me a variety of possible causes. In the intervening year all options have been explored some at some considerable expense. The latest from an expert auto electrician/fuel injection tech. got it down to No1 cylinder and either bad soldered joint or if not then unfortunately the computer box has a problem. He resoldered all joints but after one day the problem is back. Can these boxes be sorted and if so by who.?

All advice gratefully received.

I had a problem on a VG30 in a Maxima many years ago where the connection on a injector was giving me hassles. Maybe check that

Morning guys, thanks PieterB and Wilkie.

As asked the vehicle is 1998 4.5 SRX with 180000 on the clock. Over the course of the last year or so the head has been removed and skimmed, valves reseated, new radiator. Distributor overhauled, fuel injection system serviced by Bosch. Starter and alternator overhauled. That was done under the auspices of Nissan.
Air to engine supply renewed (one broken pipe found). The latest local electrician/fuel injEction guy has done another full check, all pencil coils OK but discovered that when that No1 cylinder is down there is no signal from the ECM to the injector in question. He resoldered all relative connections but the problem is still there. Of course when the fault is NOT present the ECM performs perfectly. One of the big problems is to have the fault there when the fundis are try to work it out. An infuriating problem. Otherwise the car is great and I love it. My second Patrol.

There we go, about as much as I can recall off hand. I have managed to find a guy in Durban who sorts these boxes out so that will be the next step.

Thanks again and Salaams

Just one question ..why recon the distributor...????if it was faulty ,it cannot be repaired and they normally only start getting faulty around the 300 000km mark....
There is a chip installed in that vehicle that is giving you hassles....

Good day gents

Patrol 4.5 dropping one cylinder. I had a 10 day holiday in the E Cape planned and was resigned to doing a fair percentage on 5 cylinders but I wasnt going to cancel the holiday. From leaving the house to arriving back and since, 3000 ks , the lady never missed a beat, started every time on 6 and is still running like a dream. There was some stiff 4x4 and plenty freeway. Absolutely unexplainable.

Thank you everybody for the suggestions and comments.

Regards

Good to hear that your vehicle is running smoothly again, which brings back the possibility of a connection that may not be 100%. Just on the safe side, I would double check the wiring from start to finish.

Good luck.
May the road be long.. and dirty.
