Engine Temperature Sender

Post by iandvl »

I was at Serendipity over the weekend with some friends. It was fantastic. Had to recover an FJ Cruiser, a Prado as well as a Triton during the course of the day. That is beside the point... :rolling: :rolling:

On the way back to camp, the second last ascent was very rough. I'd also opted to take the "tiger line", and had to give a reasonably amount of juice to get up the rock steps. Got to the top, and immediately noticed my temperature meter was showing absolutely nothing. Completely dead.

Stopped, and made sure I'd not lost any coolant / similar. All looked good. Drove back to camp, let the engine cool for the evening and started fault finding yesterday morning.

Step 1 : Coolant levels. All was fine.
Step 2 : Fuses. All was fine.
Step 3 : Removed engine cover, in order to find the temperature sensor (I recalled it being near the thermostat at the front of the motor from the manual). Upon removing the engine it was immediately obvious that the sensor wire had broken off from the connector.

After removing the plug. I gathered it was a generic, single tab piece, and a generic crimp-type clamp would fit. I managed to get one from another guy who was on the trip (I normally have with me, but had recently lent all my connectors out to a friend whose vehicle died). The red one fit perfectly...

A quick strip of the cable, crimp of the clamp and a bit of heatshrink later, all was good and rocking. Quick and dirty bush repair. :rolling: :rolling:

Well done bud ... I like the bush ingenuity. Such a little part to fix a little problem. I think I must put a few of those in my box of tricks !!
