Do both the electrical fans switch on when turning AC on?

If only one runs with AC, when does other electrical fan switch on?

I hope someone here can help me with some answers.

Mine only has the one fan for the aircon radiator. It is controlled by the thermostat switch that is on the bottom left ( passenger side )of the water radiator. On mine the two wires have broken off so the fan runs constantly when I switch on the AC.

My fan also is on its last legs. It has a horrible bearing noise. Can one open these fan motors and change the bearings ( scared to find out what one of these cost from Nissan.

Michael, do you still have your fan? Can I buy it from you? I have another brand new electric fan but not sure from what vehicle its from or for, but when I looked at the one on my Patrol it has what looks like 3 or 4 wires going to the motor, not 2 like on the aftermarket fan I have.

Cedric, it's meant to do that! But fix those broken wires any way - the Maiden will thank you for it!

There are two sender units at the bottom of the 4.2 diesel Patrol's radiator. One of them (the LH one, if i remember correctly) is a temperature cut-out switch that disables the AC compressor when the coolant temperature exceeds a certain temperature (about 110 deg C). The other one is the engine coolant temperature switch mentioned below.

If you look at the drawing it becomes clear that the AC fan will turn on when either of the following is true:
  • The coolant temperature exceeds 96 deg C.
  • The aircon switch is turned on.
What's not so easy to see on the picture (they really need better graphic blokes to compile their service manuals!), is that the fan will also turn off at higher speeds (>70 km/h) as long as the motor remains cool. If the coolant temps increase, the fan will still turn on.

I'm not sure how the second fan gets activated on the petrol models. Us diesel owners have to make do with only one...

I just need to find someone with a Dremmel tool so I can grind out the resin on the sender as the wires broke off right at the base

Cedric - I have a Dremel you can borrow.

Would require a drive through to Brits or Pretoria to collect it though...

I appreciate the offer Ian !!

Let me get the building work done at my house first so I can park my Iron Maiden in a garage that has extra height. Then I can concentrate on getting the little niggley bits fixed up. I'm running around like a headless chicken at the moment. Winter is approaching so the aircon will be used a lot less for the next few months!!
