Electrical problem - Help!

Post by Stefan »

Hi,

Last week Wednesday, the patrol refused to start, only a click - the battery was dead. As it is a 2nd hand vehicle, the first thing I did was to replace the battery. When I drove yesterday, I noticed that the battery light and the 'sub-tank' indicator remained on and when I tested the battery it is not getting charged!

From my limited auto-electrical knowledge, it can either be the voltage regulator or the alternator that has packed up. Any ideas if/how I can test it?

Alternatively, does any know a good, reputable auto-electrician in Cape Town?

It could be the alternator but did you check the fuses?

Thanks for this Herrie,

Is the alternator quite easy to get to?

Do you have a key as to what these symbols mean?

Quick update: I went to Hazard Bonako and they determined that the alternator is faulty. The Patrol is now with MED Auto-electricians in Gunners Circle.

Hi Stefan,

Since we're talking about MED and alternators and such, MED offer a basic auto-leccie course (covers starters and alternators iirc). Just a thought for us limited knowledge kinda guys...
