Oil seal on the front diff.

Post by ArthurKinnear »

Hi everyone, just signed up and introduced myself..

I have a 1981 Nissan Safari.. Just got it and eager to get it rolling..
I've Googled around but cant seem to find a definitive answer.. Conflicting info..

Front left left wheel was leaking gear oil, i pulled it apart to see where its coming from and have found it a little confusing.

I don't see an oil seal between the drive shaft and diff housing "tube" to stop the oil entering the hub. I don't see how one would fit in there either, the gap looks too small. Looking at the diagram off the online manual it says there should be one.

But looking at the shaft and the housing, i don't see how an oil seal could fit there..
I'm pointing at the outside of the shaft (Left of the picture) , it doesn't seem right.

Any insight would be highly appreciated, else i'm forced to strip down the other side to get an idea on what's going on.
Never expected a simple oil leak to confuse me this much..

Thanx for reading..

Confusing indeed.

I have not worked on a Safari yet, but the oils seal is definitely present on my Y60 and the Y61's as well.

On the other hand, it certainly doesn't look like there is a journal on that shaft for one to seal on...

Couple of guys who may be able to help:

I had the same issue when I rebuild my front diff ' the older ones did not have a outer oil seal,
There is a oil seal on the inside at the pumpkin which has to replaced '
The oil will run into the tube and over the years it filled up and started to leak ' if you
Park at a angle with the left wheel lower you will proberbly fine it leaks even more

those seals are inside next to the crown wheel and pinion and if you look at your side shaft too you will see where the smooth machining was done ,that is where its running ....K@K job
