Side shaft seal causing brake issues

Post by Lyon »

After the Namib desert I found my handbrake not taking as usual and a much higher handle position. I took it to Nissan Menlyn and their verdict is that the Left back side-shaft-seal leaks oil into the brake drum system. Lots of sand seems to have entered there. The diff oil level is ok. They cleaned It properly from sand and reassembled the back tyres at no cost. But the seal still needs to be replaced. Nissan referred me to Mayfair as it is a small part but a very complex procedure and my Patrol needs to stay at least two days.
Any advice?

Does the handbrake on the 4.8 not work of the prop and not on the wheels?

The 4.8 handbrake works off the two rear brake rotors/drums.

It takes 2 hand brake drum shoes in the center of the rear disk drums, I changed mine yesterday as they are past their service limit.

The hand brake shoes do wear out over time and they must be adjusted to ensure they work, there is a rubber grommet that you remove on the rotor metal backing plate on the inside of the wheel, once the rubber is removed you use a screw driver to move the adjuster to set the hand brake correctly. Must be done on both wheels.

On the same rotor it has the normal foot operated brake caliper as well

Cool.... I learnt something new today then.
So does the 4.5 hand brake run off the prop or from the rear wheels?

Only the 4.8 has this setup, the 4.5 is on the prop.

Yeah the diesels I know have the hand break on the prop, and was quite confident that the 4.5's were also on the prop. I was just very surprised that the 4.8's were completely different.

Is it all the 4.8's ( pre and post facelift) or only the post facelift 4.8's. And what about the old manual 4.8's ?

All the wagons.

I am not sure about 4.8 pickups, but I have never even seen one of those in real life...
